Role Context
The Consultant Intensivist - Critical Care will provide expert medical leadership for critically ill adult patients requiring continuous monitoring, organ support, rapid intervention, and coordinated ICU management. This role is vital in managing high-acuity medical, surgical, trauma, sepsis, respiratory failure, and multi-organ failure cases where timely decisions directly affect survival and recovery. Working in Sharjah, the consultant will support ICU protocols, rapid response systems, emergency preparedness, patient safety, and evidence-based critical care delivery in a fast-paced tertiary healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit with complex medical, surgical, trauma, septic, respiratory, or multi-organ conditions.
* Provide advanced life support and consultant-level critical care management for unstable patients requiring urgent clinical intervention.
* Lead individualized ICU treatment plans covering airway support, ventilation strategy, hemodynamic management, infection control, medication planning, nutrition support, and recovery goals.
* Perform critical care procedures including intubation, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, ventilator management, and other approved ICU interventions.
* Manage sepsis, septic shock, respiratory failure, acute deterioration, trauma-related critical illness, post-operative instability, and high-risk emergency presentations.
* Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds, review patient progress, coordinate clinical priorities, and guide escalation or de-escalation of treatment.
* Collaborate with emergency medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, pulmonology, cardiology, infectious disease, nephrology, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other specialist teams.
* Participate in rapid response teams, code blue management, hospital emergency preparedness programs, and urgent stabilization pathways.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, ICU nurses, and clinical staff where applicable, supporting safe practice and structured clinical learning.
* Ensure compliance with ICU protocols, infection control measures, patient safety standards, MOH UAE regulations, hospital policies, and clinical governance requirements.
* Maintain accurate medical documentation including ICU progress notes, procedure records, ventilator plans, consent details, handover updates, and discharge or transfer summaries.
* Contribute to clinical audits, research activities, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement initiatives, CME programs, and ICU service development.
* Stay updated with modern critical care guidelines, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, ECMO exposure, critical care ultrasound, ventilator strategies, and evidence-based ICU practice.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by MOH UAE.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anesthesia Critical Care, or Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
* Valid MOH UAE Consultant License or Eligibility Letter is required for the actual work location in Sharjah.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in ICU or Critical Care Medicine within a tertiary care hospital.
* Certification in ACLS and additional critical care certifications are preferred.
* Strong expertise in ventilator management, sepsis management, hemodynamic monitoring, advanced airway care, and critical care procedures.
* Experience in multidisciplinary ICUs and high-acuity tertiary care centers is preferred.
* Exposure to ECMO, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care ultrasound is an advantage.
* Academic, teaching, research, audit, or clinical governance experience is preferred.
* Excellent communication, leadership, decision-making, supervision, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Able to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced multicultural healthcare environment.
