Role Context

The Consultant Intensivist - Critical Care will provide consultant-level medical care for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring, organ support, urgent stabilization, and coordinated multidisciplinary treatment. This role is essential for managing complex ICU cases involving respiratory failure, sepsis, trauma, cardiac emergencies, multi-organ dysfunction, and post-surgical instability. Working in Abu Dhabi, the consultant will support evidence-based ICU pathways, emergency response systems, clinical governance, and patient safety while helping improve survival, recovery, and continuity of care for high-risk patients.

Key Responsibilities

* Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with complex medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, septic, or multi-organ conditions.
* Provide advanced life support and consultant-level critical care management for patients requiring urgent stabilization, continuous monitoring, and organ support.
* Manage respiratory failure, sepsis, septic shock, trauma-related critical illness, cardiac emergencies, acute deterioration, and multi-organ dysfunction.
* Perform critical care procedures including intubation, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, ventilator management, and bedside ultrasound where applicable.
* Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and coordinate comprehensive patient management plans covering ventilation, hemodynamics, infection control, medication strategy, nutrition, recovery goals, and escalation decisions.
* Collaborate with emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other specialties for integrated patient care.
* Participate in rapid response teams, code blue management, urgent stabilization pathways, and hospital emergency preparedness initiatives.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, ICU nurses, and clinical staff where applicable, supporting safe practice, clinical learning, and structured decision-making.
* Monitor patient progress, review investigations, adjust treatment plans, and guide family communication during critical illness and recovery planning.
* Ensure accurate medical documentation including ICU progress notes, procedure records, ventilator plans, consent details, handover updates, and transfer or discharge summaries.
* Maintain compliance with DOH Abu Dhabi regulations, hospital protocols, ICU clinical governance requirements, infection control measures, and patient safety standards.
* Participate in clinical audits, research activities, quality improvement programs, morbidity and mortality reviews, and continuing medical education activities.
* Stay updated with modern critical care guidelines, ECMO pathways, CRRT support, bronchoscopy, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, critical care ultrasound, and evidence-based ICU practice.

Ideal Profile

* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, or Anesthesia Critical Care.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Critical Care Medicine is required for the actual work location.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in ICU or Critical Care Medicine within a tertiary care or academic hospital.
* Certification in ACLS and additional advanced critical care certifications are preferred.
* Strong expertise in ventilator management, sepsis care, advanced airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care procedures.
* Experience in multidisciplinary and high-acuity ICUs is preferred.
* Exposure to ECMO, CRRT, bronchoscopy, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care ultrasound is an advantage.
* Academic, teaching, research, audit, or clinical governance experience is preferred.
* Excellent leadership, communication, clinical decision-making, supervision, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Able to work effectively in a fast-paced multicultural healthcare environment with calm judgment, resilience, and professional discipline.
