Role Context
The Consultant - Maternal Fetal Medicine will provide expert clinical leadership for pregnancies requiring advanced assessment, careful monitoring, early diagnosis, and coordinated maternal-fetal decision-making. The role has strong clinical impact because high-risk pregnancy care involves maternal medical complications, fetal anomalies, multiple gestations, preterm birth risk, genetic concerns, and complex counselling for families. Within Dubai’s advanced healthcare environment, the consultant will help strengthen specialist obstetric services, improve maternal and fetal outcomes, and support safer care pathways through precision imaging, prenatal diagnosis, multidisciplinary planning, and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the management of high-risk pregnancies involving maternal medical complications, fetal anomalies, multiple gestations, fetal growth concerns, placental issues, and preterm birth risk.
* Perform and interpret advanced fetal imaging, including detailed anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, growth assessments, and fetal wellbeing evaluations.
* Conduct prenatal diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal sampling, and other indicated diagnostic interventions.
* Provide expert counselling to families regarding fetal conditions, genetic risks, diagnostic findings, prognosis, treatment options, and pregnancy management pathways.
* Develop individualized maternal-fetal care plans based on clinical history, imaging findings, laboratory results, genetic assessment, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Collaborate with neonatology, genetics, radiology, anesthesia, obstetrics, pediatric surgery, fetal therapy teams, nurses, sonographers, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Participate in fetal therapy planning and coordinate referrals for intrauterine interventions when advanced fetal treatment is clinically required.
* Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, imaging interpretation, procedure records, counselling notes, follow-up plans, and multidisciplinary care summaries for all MFM cases.
* Support continuity of care for complex pregnancies through timely review, coordinated follow-up, escalation planning, and clear communication with patients and clinical teams.
* Contribute to departmental quality improvement, clinical governance, audit activities, patient-safety initiatives, and evidence-based pathway development.
* Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, sonographers, junior doctors, and clinical staff involved in maternal-fetal medicine services.
* Participate in on-call duties, urgent high-risk pregnancy consultations, and specialist case discussions as required by departmental needs.
* Engage in research, audits, academic activities, continuing professional development, and updates in international MFM standards and prenatal diagnostic practice.
* Maintain high standards of ethical care, confidentiality, patient communication, regulatory compliance, and culturally sensitive counselling.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Subspecialty certification or fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine or Fetal Medicine from a recognized international institution.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-fellowship experience in Maternal Fetal Medicine.
* Demonstrated expertise in high-risk pregnancy management, advanced fetal imaging, prenatal diagnostics, and tertiary-level obstetric care.
* Strong experience performing and interpreting detailed anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, fetal growth assessments, and prenatal diagnostic procedures.
* Skilled in managing maternal medical complications, fetal anomalies, multiple pregnancies, genetic risk counselling, preterm birth risk, and complex pregnancy care pathways.
* Experience working within multidisciplinary maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, genetics, radiology, anesthesia, and tertiary obstetric services.
* Strong counselling ability with the confidence to explain sensitive diagnoses, risks, treatment pathways, and long-term expectations to families.
* Excellent communication, clinical judgment, leadership, teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to supervise residents, fellows, sonographers, and junior clinical staff in a structured learning environment.
