Role Context
The Consultant MFM - Fetal Medicine will provide advanced care for pregnant patients with maternal complications, fetal abnormalities, multiple gestations, growth concerns, preterm birth risk, and complex prenatal findings. This role is clinically important because high-risk pregnancies require precise fetal imaging, careful maternal assessment, accurate counseling, timely diagnostic procedures, and close coordination with neonatology, genetics, radiology, anesthesia, and obstetric teams. The consultant will help improve maternal and fetal outcomes through expert decision-making, structured follow-up, fetal therapy planning, and patient-centered communication.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the assessment and management of high-risk pregnancies involving maternal medical complications, fetal anomalies, multiple gestations, growth restriction, preterm birth risk, and complex obstetric concerns.
* Perform and interpret advanced fetal imaging including detailed anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, fetal growth assessments, and specialist ultrasound reviews.
* Conduct prenatal diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal sampling, and other clinically indicated procedures within approved privileges.
* Provide expert counseling to families regarding fetal conditions, genetic risks, pregnancy prognosis, diagnostic options, treatment pathways, and delivery planning.
* Collaborate with neonatology, genetics, radiology, anesthesia, obstetrics, pediatric surgery, fetal therapy teams, and other specialties to optimize maternal and fetal care.
* Participate in fetal therapy planning and coordinate referrals for intrauterine interventions when advanced fetal treatment is required.
* Develop individualized care plans for high-risk pregnancy patients, ensuring clear monitoring schedules, escalation pathways, and follow-up arrangements.
* Review laboratory findings, genetic screening results, imaging reports, fetal assessment data, and maternal clinical information to guide evidence-based decisions.
* Ensure accurate documentation, scan reporting, diagnostic procedure notes, counseling records, consent details, and follow-up plans for all maternal-fetal medicine cases.
* Contribute to departmental quality improvement, clinical governance, patient safety initiatives, case reviews, and protocol development.
* Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, sonographers, and clinical staff in maternal-fetal medicine practice, fetal imaging, and high-risk pregnancy care.
* Participate in on-call duties as per departmental requirements and provide expert input for urgent high-risk obstetric or fetal medicine cases.
* Engage in research, audits, continuing professional development, and evidence-based practice updates to maintain international standards in fetal medicine.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Subspecialty certification, fellowship, or recognized advanced training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine or Fetal Medicine from an international institution.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-fellowship experience in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
* Demonstrated expertise in advanced fetal imaging, high-risk pregnancy management, prenatal diagnostics, fetal echocardiography, Doppler assessment, and anomaly scanning.
* Experience in multidisciplinary care within a tertiary-level obstetric or fetal medicine service.
* Skilled in prenatal procedures including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and fetal sampling where clinically required.
* Strong ability to counsel families with clarity, sensitivity, and confidence during complex pregnancy and fetal diagnosis discussions.
* Able to collaborate effectively with neonatology, genetics, radiology, anesthesia, obstetrics, and fetal therapy teams.
* Experienced in teaching, mentoring, scan review, clinical audit, research, and quality improvement activities.
