Role Context
The Consultant Neonatologist will provide consultant-level medical leadership for newborns requiring intensive monitoring, advanced respiratory support, emergency stabilization, and multidisciplinary neonatal treatment. The role spans delivery-room resuscitation, NICU management, family counseling, procedural care, infection prevention, and long-term clinical planning for premature and medically complex infants. Through close collaboration with obstetrics, pediatric subspecialties, surgery, anesthesia, respiratory therapy, and neonatal nursing teams, the consultant will help improve survival, reduce complications, and strengthen the quality of neonatal intensive care services.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive medical management for premature, critically ill, and high-risk newborns admitted to the NICU.
* Diagnose and treat neonatal respiratory distress, sepsis, congenital abnormalities, metabolic disorders, and complications associated with prematurity.
* Stabilize extremely premature and medically fragile infants requiring intensive neonatal support.
* Lead neonatal resuscitation in delivery rooms and emergency situations.
* Perform endotracheal intubation and manage advanced neonatal airway requirements.
* Insert umbilical arterial and venous catheters where clinically indicated.
* Perform central venous access procedures and oversee appropriate line management.
* Manage invasive and non-invasive neonatal ventilation using individualized respiratory strategies.
* Monitor oxygenation, ventilation, blood gases, hemodynamic status, and organ function in critically ill newborns.
* Develop individualized treatment plans according to gestational age, diagnosis, clinical response, and developmental needs.
* Manage neonatal infections using evidence-based diagnostic and antimicrobial strategies.
* Coordinate care for newborns with congenital anomalies requiring pediatric surgical or subspecialty assessment.
* Provide emergency stabilization for neonatal deterioration, respiratory failure, shock, seizures, and other acute conditions.
* Participate in antenatal counseling for families facing high-risk delivery, extreme prematurity, congenital disorders, or anticipated neonatal complications.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment plans, prognosis, and ongoing care needs sensitively to parents and families.
* Lead multidisciplinary NICU rounds and coordinate daily management priorities.
* Collaborate with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and neonatal nurses.
* Ensure compliance with NICU infection prevention protocols, hand hygiene, line safety, and neonatal patient safety standards.
* Supervise residents, fellows, junior physicians, and NICU nursing staff.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, neonatal audits, quality improvement programs, and clinical governance activities.
* Contribute to neonatal research, case reviews, teaching, and continuing medical education.
* Maintain accurate progress notes, procedure records, discharge summaries, clinical handovers, and family communication documentation.
* Support development and review of NICU protocols, neonatal emergency pathways, and evidence-based clinical standards.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatrics.
* Fellowship or recognized subspecialty certification in Neonatology or Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in Neonatology.
* Significant experience practicing within a Level III or Level IV NICU.
* Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Advanced experience in neonatal intensive care, resuscitation, respiratory support, and ventilator management.
* Strong competence in neonatal airway management, umbilical line placement, and central vascular access.
* Extensive knowledge of prematurity-related complications, neonatal infection, congenital abnormalities, and metabolic conditions.
* Western Board Certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or equivalent is highly desirable.
* Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification or recognized equivalent training is advantageous.
