Role Context
The Consultant - Neuro-Ophthalmology provides expert evaluation and treatment for patients whose visual symptoms are connected to neurological, inflammatory, vascular, compressive, or systemic conditions. The role requires a careful balance of ophthalmic examination, neurological reasoning, imaging interpretation, and multidisciplinary care planning.
This position has direct clinical impact on early diagnosis, vision preservation, neurological risk detection, and long-term patient management. The consultant will support accurate decision-making for complex visual complaints while helping patients and families understand diagnosis, treatment options, monitoring needs, and referral pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage optic nerve disorders, neuro-visual pathway abnormalities, unexplained visual loss, visual field defects, diplopia, papilledema, optic neuritis, and related neuro-ophthalmic conditions.
* Conduct detailed neuro-ophthalmology consultations, including history review, ocular examination, visual function assessment, eye movement evaluation, and neurological correlation.
* Interpret neuro-imaging relevant to ophthalmology, including MRI, CT, orbital imaging, vascular studies, and reports linked to optic nerve, brain, orbit, and visual pathway disease.
* Work closely with neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, pediatric ophthalmology, endocrinology, rheumatology, and other specialist teams for complex patient cases.
* Develop individualized treatment and monitoring plans based on diagnosis, disease severity, imaging findings, visual function, neurological risk, and patient needs.
* Evaluate and manage patients with inflammatory, compressive, vascular, traumatic, congenital, or systemic causes of neuro-visual symptoms.
* Provide specialist input for pediatric patients where neuro-ophthalmic symptoms overlap with developmental, congenital, or neurological concerns.
* Explain diagnoses, investigation findings, treatment options, warning symptoms, and follow-up plans clearly to patients and families.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, diagnostic findings, imaging reviews, referral letters, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation.
* Follow DHA regulations, clinical governance standards, patient safety protocols, ethical practice, and confidentiality requirements.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, clinical audits, teaching, and continuing medical education activities.
Ideal Profile
* Tier 1 qualification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, New Zealand Fellowship, or equivalent recognized specialist training.
* Fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology is required.
* Dual training or strong additional experience in pediatric ophthalmology is highly desirable.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in neuro-ophthalmology or a closely related ophthalmology subspecialty.
* Active DHA license or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure is preferred.
* Strong expertise in optic nerve disease, neuro-visual pathway disorders, papilledema, optic neuritis, diplopia, and complex visual symptoms linked to neurological conditions.
* Ability to interpret neuro-imaging findings and integrate them with ophthalmic and neurological assessment.
* Excellent communication skills for patient counselling, multidisciplinary discussions, referral coordination, and clinical documentation.
