Role Context
The Consultant - Neuro-Ophthalmology will provide advanced clinical care for patients with optic nerve disorders, neuro-visual pathway conditions, ocular motility concerns, and visual symptoms associated with neurological disease. The role requires precise diagnostic assessment, interpretation of neuro-imaging, coordination with specialist teams, and careful communication with patients facing complex visual and neurological conditions. Dual training in pediatric ophthalmology is highly valuable, especially for patients requiring child-focused assessment and long-term neuro-visual care.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage optic nerve disorders, neuro-visual pathway abnormalities, and complex visual symptoms related to neurological conditions.
* Evaluate and treat patients with optic neuritis, papilledema, diplopia, visual field defects, unexplained vision loss, ocular motility disorders, and related neuro-ophthalmic presentations.
* Conduct detailed clinical assessments, including visual acuity review, pupil assessment, ocular alignment evaluation, visual field interpretation, fundus examination, and neuro-ophthalmic workup.
* Interpret neuro-imaging relevant to ophthalmology, including MRI, CT, and other diagnostic studies used in neuro-visual pathway assessment.
* Work closely with neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, radiology, emergency medicine, and allied healthcare teams for coordinated patient care.
* Develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans for adult and pediatric patients with neuro-ophthalmic conditions.
* Identify urgent or sight-threatening presentations and coordinate timely escalation, intervention, or referral where required.
* Provide expert consultation for complex inpatient and outpatient cases involving visual symptoms, neurological disease, or post-surgical neuro-visual concerns.
* Communicate diagnoses, imaging findings, treatment options, prognosis, and monitoring plans clearly to patients and families.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, diagnostic reports, referral letters, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation in line with DHA and hospital standards.
* Support multidisciplinary case discussions and contribute to clinical decision-making for complex neurological and ophthalmic presentations.
* Participate in clinical audits, teaching, continuing medical education, and quality improvement activities related to neuro-ophthalmology care.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Tier 1 qualification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, New Zealand Fellowship, or equivalent recognized specialist certification.
* Fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology is required.
* Dual training or strong experience in pediatric ophthalmology is highly desirable.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in neuro-ophthalmology or a closely related specialist setting.
* Strong expertise in optic nerve disease, neuro-visual pathway disorders, diplopia, papilledema, optic neuritis, ocular motility conditions, and visual field abnormalities.
* Ability to interpret neuro-imaging and collaborate effectively with neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, and ophthalmology teams.
* Confident clinical judgment with the ability to manage complex diagnostic cases and urgent neuro-ophthalmic presentations.
* Strong patient communication skills with a calm, precise, and compassionate approach.
