Role Context
The
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage neuro-ophthalmic disorders affecting the optic nerve, visual pathways, ocular motility, pupils, cranial nerves, and neurological vision.
* Evaluate and treat conditions such as optic neuritis, papilledema, diplopia, visual field defects, ischemic optic neuropathy, cranial nerve palsies, myasthenia gravis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and neuro-ophthalmic emergencies.
* Perform comprehensive neuro-ophthalmic examinations, including visual acuity assessment, ocular motility review, pupillary assessment, fundus examination, optic nerve evaluation, and visual pathway assessment.
* Interpret specialized ophthalmic investigations including optical coherence tomography, visual field testing, fundus imaging, fluorescein angiography, and electrophysiological studies.
* Correlate MRI, CT, and other neuroimaging findings with ophthalmic signs, neurological symptoms, endocrine conditions, and suspected central nervous system pathology.
* Provide specialized care for adult and pediatric patients with neuro-ophthalmic disorders, especially where pediatric ophthalmology training supports broader neuro-visual services.
* Collaborate with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, endocrinologists, pediatricians, rehabilitation specialists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Develop multidisciplinary treatment plans for complex cases involving visual loss, optic nerve swelling, double vision, neurological eye movement disorders, and post-neurosurgical visual concerns.
* Provide pre-operative and post-operative ophthalmic assessment for selected patients undergoing neurological, neurosurgical, pituitary, orbital, or cranial procedures.
* Educate patients and families about diagnosis, treatment choices, prognosis, monitoring needs, warning signs, and long-term disease management.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, imaging correlations, diagnostic reports, treatment plans, referral letters, follow-up records, and regulatory medical documentation.
* Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical audits, quality improvement activities, research initiatives, continuing medical education, and complex case reviews.
* Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, orthoptists, technicians, and allied healthcare professionals involved in neuro-ophthalmic care.
* Ensure clinical practice follows patient safety standards, infection control protocols, ethical medical practice, evidence-based guidelines, and applicable UAE healthcare regulations.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Completion of a recognized residency in Ophthalmology.
* Fellowship training in Neuro-Ophthalmology from a recognized institution.
* Dual fellowship or subspecialty training in Pediatric Ophthalmology is highly preferred.
* Tier 1 qualification such as American Board Certification, UK Certificate of Completion of Training, Canadian Fellowship, Australian or New Zealand Fellowship, or equivalent internationally recognized qualification.
* DOH License, DOH Eligibility Letter, or eligibility for Consultant licensure in the UAE is preferred.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in Neuro-Ophthalmology.
* Extensive experience managing complex neuro-ophthalmic disorders in adult and pediatric populations.
* Previous experience in a tertiary care hospital or academic medical center is highly preferred.
* Advanced expertise in neuro-ophthalmic diagnosis, ophthalmic investigations, neurological vision disorders, and neuroimaging interpretation.
* Strong ability to manage optic nerve disorders, papilledema, diplopia, cranial nerve palsies, visual field abnormalities, and neuro-ophthalmic emergencies.
* Excellent clinical judgment, communication, patient counselling, multidisciplinary decision-making, and time-management skills.
* Strong commitment to evidence-based medicine, research, ethical practice, accurate documentation, patient safety, and continuous professional development.
