What Does a Consultant Ophthalmologist Do?
- Diagnose and treat a full spectrum of eye diseases and vision disorders, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and refractive errors
- Perform complex ophthalmic surgeries, including LASIK, phacoemulsification for cataracts, and retinal procedures using advanced surgical tools
- Conduct thorough eye examinations and interpret diagnostic imaging (OCT, fundus photography, visual field tests)
- Prescribe corrective lenses, therapeutic medications, and rehabilitation plans as part of a comprehensive care strategy
- Advise patients on preventative eye care and provide post-operative guidance for optimal recovery
- Collaborate with optometrists, retinal specialists, and other healthcare providers to coordinate multidisciplinary patient care
- Stay updated with the latest developments in ocular treatments, surgical techniques, and AI-based diagnostic tools
- Participate in clinical audits, CME programs, and quality assurance processes to ensure high-standard ophthalmic practice
What Skills Are Needed for a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Dubai?
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent qualification from a recognized university
- Board certification in Ophthalmology (e.g., FRCOphth, ABO, or equivalent)
- Fellowship in a subspecialty (e.g., Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma) is a plus
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of post-board certification experience in a clinical and surgical ophthalmology setting
- Proven success in managing both common and complex eye diseases and performing advanced ocular surgeries
- Experience in working with international patient populations is an advantage
