Role Context
The Consultant Ophthalmologist - Reconstructive Care provides expert diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management for patients with ophthalmic and periocular conditions requiring oculoplastic or reconstructive intervention. The role combines detailed eye assessment, orbital and eyelid evaluation, surgical planning, post-operative follow-up, and coordinated care with related surgical and medical specialties.
This position has strong clinical impact because reconstructive ophthalmology supports both visual function and facial-eye structure. The consultant will work with ENT, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, anesthesia, nursing, and other multidisciplinary teams to manage complex cases with precision and continuity of care.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage ophthalmic, orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive or oculoplastic intervention.
* Perform reconstructive ophthalmic procedures, including eyelid reconstruction, functional eyelid surgery, lacrimal surgery, orbital procedures, trauma reconstruction, and periocular repair.
* Evaluate and treat patients with orbital disease, eyelid malpositions, tumors, facial trauma, tear drainage disorders, and complex oculoplastic conditions.
* Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology consultations for patients requiring specialist assessment and surgical planning.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, visual function, facial anatomy, imaging findings, clinical risk, and patient needs.
* Collaborate with ENT, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, anesthesia, nursing, and multidisciplinary teams for complex reconstructive cases.
* Manage pre-operative counselling, informed consent, procedure planning, post-operative care, wound monitoring, recovery assessment, and long-term follow-up.
* Educate patients and families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, treatment risks, expected outcomes, medication use, and post-operative care.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative records, consent documentation, treatment plans, follow-up reports, and clinical correspondence in line with DHA requirements.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research activity, clinical audits, teaching sessions, and continuing medical education programs.
* Follow patient safety standards, infection control protocols, confidentiality requirements, clinical governance frameworks, and evidence-based ophthalmology practice.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Ophthalmology with subspecialty training in Oculoplastic or Reconstructive Ophthalmology.
* Active DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in reconstructive ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
* Strong expertise in advanced reconstructive, lacrimal, eyelid, orbital, trauma-related, and functional ophthalmic surgical procedures.
* Experience in tertiary eye care, academic medical centers, complex orbital surgery, or facial reconstructive surgery is preferred.
* Research, teaching, audit, or academic contribution experience is an advantage.
* Strong communication, patient counselling, surgical documentation, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural healthcare environment with attention to patient safety, functional outcomes, and compassionate care.
