Role Context
The Consultant - Paediatric Cardiac Surgery will provide expert surgical care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions. The role covers complex open-heart surgery, valve repair, congenital defect correction, emergency surgical intervention, perioperative care, ICU collaboration, and long-term follow-up planning. The consultant will work closely with paediatric cardiologists, cardiac anaesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nursing teams, and allied healthcare professionals to improve surgical outcomes and strengthen paediatric cardiac services in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex paediatric cardiac surgeries, including open-heart procedures, congenital defect correction, valve repairs, and other advanced cardiac surgical interventions.
* Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment, surgical planning, risk evaluation, and optimization for paediatric cardiac patients.
* Manage post-operative care in collaboration with paediatric cardiac ICU, anaesthesia, cardiology, perfusion, nursing, and rehabilitation teams.
* Support ICU decision-making for complex cardiac surgical patients, including ventilation, hemodynamic support, rhythm monitoring, and complication management.
* Participate in on-call rotations and provide emergency surgical support for urgent paediatric cardiac cases.
* Collaborate with paediatric cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, radiologists, perfusionists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care.
* Conduct long-term follow-up for surgical patients, monitoring recovery, cardiac function, complications, and future treatment needs.
* Communicate clearly with families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, risks, expected outcomes, recovery timelines, and post-discharge care.
* Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, residents, fellows, surgical trainees, and clinical team members.
* Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation, including consultation notes, operative reports, consent forms, ICU handovers, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans.
* Contribute to departmental research, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, protocol updates, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Participate in academic programs, CME activities, case conferences, and professional development events.
* Support a culture of surgical excellence, ethical practice, clinical governance, and family-centered care.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Specialization in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Fellowship training in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery from a recognized institution.
* Board certification such as American Board, FRCS, Arab Board, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship experience in paediatric cardiac surgery.
* Proven record of successful surgical outcomes in high-volume paediatric cardiac centers.
* Strong expertise in congenital heart surgery, paediatric valve repair, open-heart procedures, cardiac emergencies, and post-operative cardiac surgical care.
* Experience working with advanced paediatric cardiac programs, cardiac ICUs, hybrid operating suites, or tertiary-care surgical facilities.
* Ability to collaborate effectively with cardiology, anaesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and allied healthcare teams.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Prior GCC healthcare experience is preferred.
* Strong leadership, communication, teaching, documentation, and family counselling skills.
