Role Context
The Consultant - Palliative Care will provide expert clinical leadership for patients living with serious, advanced, chronic, or life-limiting illness. The role combines medical symptom management, pain control, psychosocial support, family meetings, advance care planning, goals-of-care discussions, and coordination with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and home care teams. The consultant will help strengthen palliative care services in Dubai by improving comfort, dignity, continuity of care, patient safety, and family support during sensitive stages of illness.
Core Duties
* Assess, diagnose, and manage patients requiring palliative care, supportive care, complex symptom control, or end-of-life medical support.
* Develop individualized treatment plans focused on pain relief, symptom management, emotional wellbeing, functional comfort, and quality-of-life improvement.
* Provide expert consultation for complex pain, breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, delirium, anxiety, depression, appetite concerns, and other distressing symptoms.
* Support patients with advanced cancer, chronic organ failure, neurological decline, frailty, and other life-limiting or progressive medical conditions.
* Coordinate care with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, pharmacy, spiritual care, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Conduct family meetings and facilitate goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, treatment preference reviews, and end-of-life decision-making.
* Ensure continuity of care across inpatient units, outpatient clinics, home care services, hospice pathways, and community-based support where applicable.
* Communicate with patients and families clearly and compassionately regarding prognosis, symptom expectations, care options, treatment limitations, and support services.
* Participate in the development and implementation of palliative care policies, clinical pathways, protocols, referral processes, and service standards.
* Contribute to patient safety programs, quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, outcome reviews, and service development projects.
* Provide teaching and mentorship to physicians, residents, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and multidisciplinary team members.
* Promote awareness of palliative care principles among healthcare providers, patients, families, and the wider care community.
* Participate in continuing medical education, conferences, departmental teaching sessions, research activity, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including consultation notes, symptom plans, medication decisions, family meeting records, advance care planning discussions, and follow-up recommendations.
* Ensure practice complies with UAE healthcare regulations, accreditation requirements, ethical standards, confidentiality principles, and hospital policies.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completion of accredited specialty training in Palliative Medicine or a related specialty.
* Recognized fellowship, subspecialty certification, or equivalent qualification in Palliative Care.
* Board certification or recognized consultant-level qualification in a relevant specialty.
* Eligibility for UAE consultant-level licensure in Palliative Care or related medical practice.
* Minimum 5 years of post-board or post-fellowship experience as a Consultant in Palliative Care.
* Experience in tertiary care hospitals, cancer centers, dedicated palliative care units, hospice care, or advanced supportive care services.
* Strong expertise in pain management, oncology supportive care, symptom control, end-of-life care, and advance care planning.
* Proven ability to lead sensitive family discussions with empathy, clarity, professionalism, and cultural awareness.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Proficiency in English is required; Arabic language skills will be an advantage.
* Experience in palliative care service development, quality improvement, clinical governance, teaching, or research will be valued.
