Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Anesthesia will provide expert perioperative care for young patients requiring elective and emergency procedures, with a strong focus on safety, risk control, advanced monitoring, and compassionate communication with families. The position supports a prestigious tertiary care hospital environment, with exposure to pediatric surgery, neonatal cases, diagnostic procedures, intensive care collaboration, and emergency response. By combining clinical precision with teaching, simulation training, and quality improvement, the consultant helps strengthen pediatric anesthesia standards and improve outcomes for children with routine and complex care needs.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide comprehensive anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing elective, emergency, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.
* Develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient history, age, clinical condition, surgical requirements, airway risk, and perioperative assessment.
* Manage patients throughout the full perioperative pathway, including preoperative review, intraoperative anesthesia, advanced monitoring, recovery, and post-anesthesia follow-up.
* Deliver safe airway management, ventilation support, hemodynamic monitoring, medication administration, fluid management, and rapid intervention during pediatric procedures.
* Support pediatric code blue response, emergency resuscitation, and critical care teams when advanced airway or anesthesia expertise is required.
* Collaborate with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, anesthesiology colleagues, nurses, recovery teams, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Supervise and mentor junior anesthetists, residents, fellows, anesthesia technicians, and clinical staff involved in pediatric perioperative care.
* Participate in departmental teaching, simulation-based training, case discussions, and structured learning activities for pediatric emergencies.
* Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, patient-safety reviews, morbidity and mortality meetings, and audit activities.
* Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, hospital policies, anesthesia safety standards, infection control procedures, and clinical documentation requirements.
* Engage in clinical research, continuing medical education, academic development, and evidence-based improvement of pediatric anesthesia services.
* Communicate clearly with patients and families about anesthesia plans, procedure risks, recovery expectations, and post-procedure care.
* Maintain accurate anesthesia records, clinical notes, consent documentation, recovery plans, medication records, and regulatory medical documentation.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Completed residency training in Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology from a recognized institution.
* Board certification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian FRCP, or equivalent specialist qualification.
* Minimum 2-5 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric anesthesia.
* Eligibility for Consultant classification by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties is preferred for Saudi-based clinical assignments.
* Strong experience providing anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents in surgical, diagnostic, emergency, or critical care settings.
* Exposure to neonatal and pediatric intensive care environments will be an advantage.
* Familiarity with advanced monitoring systems, pediatric anesthesia technologies, airway equipment, and perioperative safety protocols.
* Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
* Strong communication, crisis management, clinical judgment, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, ethical practice, accurate documentation, teaching, research, and continuous professional development.
