Role Context

The Consultant


Pediatric Anesthesiologist will support safe surgical and procedural care for young patients who require carefully planned anesthesia management due to age, clinical complexity, airway risk, emergency presentation, or underlying medical conditions. The role has direct impact on surgical safety, recovery quality, pain control, pediatric emergency readiness, and the overall reliability of neonatal and pediatric perioperative services. Working closely with surgeons, PICU, NICU, nursing, emergency, and allied healthcare teams, the consultant will help maintain high standards of evidence-based pediatric anesthesia care in a modern clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide safe, evidence-based anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents across elective, urgent, emergency, and high-risk surgical procedures.
* Conduct detailed preoperative assessments, review clinical history, identify anesthesia risks, and prepare individualized perioperative care plans for pediatric patients.
* Deliver intraoperative anesthesia management including airway control, ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, fluid planning, medication management, and emergency response.
* Manage anesthesia for complex pediatric and neonatal surgeries requiring advanced clinical judgment, careful monitoring, and age-specific physiological understanding.
* Oversee postoperative recovery, pain management, sedation protocols, and safe transition of pediatric patients to recovery units, wards, PICU, or NICU when required.
* Support PICU and NICU teams with airway management, procedural sedation, stabilization, and clinical input for critically ill pediatric patients.
* Participate in pediatric emergency response, including resuscitation, crisis management, rapid stabilization, and airway support.
* Ensure all anesthesia care follows pediatric anesthesia safety standards, clinical guidelines, patient safety protocols, infection control practices, and UAE regulatory requirements.
* Contribute to clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement work, patient-safety programs, and departmental performance initiatives.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, anesthesia records, consent-related notes, medication details, procedure reports, and follow-up information.
* Teach and supervise residents, fellows, nurses, anesthesia technicians, and allied health staff involved in pediatric perioperative care.
* Participate in simulation-based training for pediatric emergencies, difficult airway situations, resuscitation scenarios, and crisis response drills.
* Engage in research, academic work, continuous professional development, and updates related to modern pediatric anesthesia practice.
* Support departmental policy development, clinical pathways, sedation protocols, and service improvement plans.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency training in Anesthesiology.
* Recognized fellowship or subspecialty training in Pediatric Anesthesia.
* Board certification such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent international qualification.
* Eligibility for UAE consultant licensing, with DOH or HAAD Consultant License eligibility considered an advantage.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-consultant experience in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.
* Demonstrated expertise in neonatal anesthesia, pediatric airway management, pediatric resuscitation, high-risk surgical anesthesia, and perioperative care.
* Experience in a tertiary care hospital, children’s hospital, or high-volume pediatric surgical center is an advantage.
* Strong clinical decision-making skills with the ability to remain calm and precise during emergency or high-risk pediatric cases.
* Excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, teaching, and supervision skills.
* Able to work effectively with surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, nurses, anesthesia teams, and multidisciplinary pediatric services.
* Committed to evidence-based practice, patient safety, ethical care, clinical governance, and continuous improvement.
