Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Anesthesiologist will deliver specialized anesthesia care for children requiring surgical, diagnostic, emergency, and high-risk procedures. The role has direct impact on perioperative safety, pain control, airway stability, post-anesthesia recovery, and outcomes for pediatric patients with complex medical or surgical needs. Working with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, nurses, residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary operating room teams, the consultant will support advanced pediatric surgical services while strengthening training, simulation practice, quality improvement, and patient safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide comprehensive anesthesia care to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing elective and emergency procedures.
* Develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient history, age, airway assessment, surgical requirements, comorbidities, and perioperative risk.
* Conduct pre-anesthetic evaluations, explain anesthesia plans to families, obtain informed consent, and prepare patients for safe procedural care.
* Administer and monitor pediatric anesthesia during surgical, diagnostic, interventional, and emergency procedures.
* Manage patients throughout the perioperative period, including intraoperative monitoring, airway management, fluid therapy, pain control, and post-anesthesia recovery.
* Support pediatric patients with complex medical conditions, neonatal considerations, congenital anomalies, high-risk airway concerns, and critical care needs.
* Participate in pediatric code blue, emergency response, resuscitation, and critical care support teams when required.
* Collaborate with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, emergency physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Supervise and mentor junior anesthetists, residents, fellows, operating room staff, and clinical trainees.
* Contribute to departmental teaching, simulation training, pediatric anesthesia education, and clinical skills development.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities, morbidity reviews, audits, and patient safety programs.
* Ensure compliance with SCFHS regulations, hospital policies, infection control standards, anesthesia documentation requirements, and ethical medical practice.
* Engage in clinical research, continuing medical education, academic discussions, and evidence-based pediatric anesthesia service improvement.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency training in Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian FRCP, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligible for Consultant classification by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
* Minimum 2-5 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric anesthesia.
* Strong experience providing anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents in tertiary care or advanced surgical environments.
* Experience in neonatal and pediatric intensive care settings will be an advantage.
* Familiarity with advanced monitoring systems, pediatric anesthesia technologies, and high-acuity perioperative workflows is preferred.
* Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language skills will be an advantage.
* Strong communication, crisis management, clinical judgment, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Interest in academic teaching, simulation training, pediatric anesthesia research, or departmental quality improvement will be valued.
* Commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, ethical practice, accurate documentation, and continuous professional development.
