Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Anesthesiology will provide expert perioperative anesthesia care for children undergoing routine, complex, emergency, and high-risk procedures. The role includes preoperative risk assessment, anesthetic planning, intraoperative management, airway control, hemodynamic monitoring, postoperative recovery, pain management, and sedation support for pediatric critical care pathways. The consultant will also contribute to clinical governance, simulation training, quality improvement, and patient safety leadership within a multidisciplinary hospital environment in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide safe, evidence-based anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing elective, emergency, diagnostic, and high-risk surgical procedures.
* Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments, review medical history, evaluate airway risk, assess comorbidities, and complete pediatric anesthesia risk stratification.
* Develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient age, clinical condition, surgical complexity, perioperative risk, and family communication needs.
* Deliver intraoperative anesthesia management, including airway control, ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, fluid management, analgesia, and emergency response.
* Manage anesthesia for complex pediatric and neonatal surgeries requiring advanced clinical judgment and close multidisciplinary coordination.
* Oversee postoperative recovery, pain management, sedation protocols, and safe transition from operating room to recovery, ward, PICU, or NICU.
* Support PICU and NICU teams with pediatric airway management, procedural sedation, difficult airway support, and urgent anesthesia consultation.
* Participate in pediatric emergency response, including resuscitation, stabilization, code blue response, and crisis management.
* Ensure adherence to pediatric anesthesia safety standards, clinical guidelines, infection control policies, patient safety requirements, and UAE regulatory standards.
* Contribute to clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, departmental quality improvement initiatives, and anesthesia service development.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, anesthesia records, consent notes, medication records, procedure reports, and recovery documentation.
* Teach and supervise residents, fellows, nurses, allied health staff, and junior clinicians involved in pediatric perioperative care.
* Participate in simulation-based training for pediatric emergencies, airway crises, resuscitation events, and operating room safety scenarios.
* Engage in research, academic activities, continuing professional development, and evidence-based updates in pediatric anesthesia practice.
* Support departmental policy development, clinical pathway creation, patient safety programs, and continuous improvement in pediatric perioperative outcomes.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification.
* Completed residency training in Anesthesiology.
* Recognized fellowship or subspecialty training in Pediatric Anesthesia.
* Board certification such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for DOH or HAAD Consultant License.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-consultant experience in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.
* Demonstrated expertise in neonatal anesthesia, infant anesthesia, pediatric airway management, perioperative risk assessment, and high-risk pediatric surgical care.
* Experience in tertiary care hospitals, high-volume pediatric surgical centers, neonatal services, or pediatric critical care settings will be an advantage.
* Strong crisis management ability with confidence in pediatric resuscitation, emergency response, and complex airway situations.
* Excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
