Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac ICU provides expert intensive care for children with congenital and acquired heart disease who require highly specialized monitoring, stabilization, and advanced organ support. The role covers complex PCICU care before and after congenital heart surgery, as well as support for patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures or presenting with acute cardiac emergencies.
This position has direct impact on survival, recovery, family confidence, and long-term pediatric cardiac outcomes. The consultant will lead clinical planning, guide multidisciplinary rounds, support protocol development, mentor junior staff, and contribute to quality improvement in a specialized pediatric cardiac care environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU, including neonates, infants, and children with congenital or acquired heart disease.
* Provide pre-operative stabilization and optimization for pediatric cardiac surgical patients requiring intensive monitoring and advanced support.
* Lead post-operative care following congenital heart surgery, including hemodynamic management, rhythm monitoring, ventilator support, pain control, and complication prevention.
* Manage ECMO support, mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive therapy, sedation strategies, and cardiac emergency interventions.
* Care for patients after complex interventional cardiology procedures, ensuring timely monitoring, escalation, and recovery planning.
* Lead multidisciplinary PCICU rounds and coordinate individualized treatment plans with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied health teams.
* Interpret complex diagnostic data, including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, cardiac imaging, and post-operative monitoring results.
* Provide urgent clinical support for pediatric cardiac emergencies, sudden deterioration, low cardiac output states, arrhythmias, heart failure, and post-surgical complications.
* Communicate clearly and compassionately with families regarding clinical condition, treatment priorities, risks, progress, and long-term care expectations.
* Support quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, patient safety activity, clinical audits, and departmental growth.
* Mentor junior physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, and clinical staff involved in pediatric cardiac intensive care.
* Participate in teaching, research, CME activities, morbidity and mortality reviews, and multidisciplinary case discussions.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, ICU records, procedure documentation, family discussion records, and follow-up plans in line with DHA requirements and hospital policies.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or equivalent specialist qualification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is required.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Active DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure.
* Strong expertise in congenital heart disease, ECMO, post-operative pediatric cardiac ICU care, mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and pediatric cardiac emergencies.
* Proven ability to lead complex PCICU rounds, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and make safe decisions in high-acuity clinical situations.
* Excellent communication skills for family counselling, clinical handovers, teaching, documentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
