Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac ICU will provide expert critical care for neonates, infants, and children with congenital and acquired heart diseases. The role covers pre-operative stabilization, post-operative care after congenital heart surgery, interventional cardiology recovery, heart failure management, arrhythmia care, cardiomyopathy support, ECMO coordination, mechanical ventilation, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring. The consultant will play a key role in strengthening Pediatric Cardiac ICU outcomes in Dubai by leading daily rounds, supporting clinical pathways, mentoring teams, and coordinating care with pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and allied healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide comprehensive critical care management for neonates, infants, and children with complex congenital and acquired cardiac conditions.
* Lead pre-operative stabilization and optimization for pediatric patients awaiting congenital heart surgery or cardiac intervention.
* Manage post-operative recovery following congenital cardiac surgery, including ventilation strategy, vasoactive support, fluid balance, rhythm monitoring, and complication prevention.
* Care for pediatric patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures, ensuring safe ICU admission, monitoring, recovery, and escalation when needed.
* Diagnose and manage heart failure, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, low cardiac output states, shock, and complex cardiac emergencies.
* Support ECMO care, mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, advanced hemodynamic assessment, and multi-organ support in critically ill pediatric cardiac patients.
* Lead daily Pediatric Cardiac ICU rounds and coordinate multidisciplinary care plans with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and rehabilitation teams.
* Interpret complex diagnostic information, including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, cardiac imaging, laboratory trends, and bedside monitoring data.
* Provide on-call coverage for pediatric cardiac emergencies and support rapid clinical decision-making in high-acuity situations.
* Communicate clinical status, risks, treatment options, prognosis, and care plans clearly and compassionately to families.
* Support families through critical decision-making, long-term treatment planning, post-operative recovery, and discharge preparation.
* Contribute to the strategic growth of the Pediatric Cardiac ICU service through protocol development, clinical pathway updates, quality indicators, audit activity, and service improvement projects.
* Mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and critical care staff in pediatric cardiac ICU practice, patient safety, and evidence-based care.
* Participate in clinical research, institutional audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement projects, CME programs, and academic conferences.
* Maintain accurate ICU notes, procedure records, consent documentation, family communication records, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans in line with DHA and hospital standards.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care from a recognized center.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including consultant-level practice in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Strong expertise in managing complex congenital heart disease, post-operative congenital cardiac surgery patients, and pediatric cardiac emergencies.
* Advanced clinical ability in ECMO, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medication management, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and multidisciplinary ICU care.
* Experience leading PCICU rounds, developing care pathways, improving protocols, and contributing to service development.
* Ability to work confidently with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nursing teams, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Strong leadership, communication, family counselling, teaching, and clinical decision-making skills.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, clinical governance, academic excellence, and continuous professional development.
