Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac ICU will provide advanced intensive care for critically ill children with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions in Dubai. The role covers pre-operative stabilization, post-operative care after congenital heart surgery, recovery support for interventional cardiology cases, ECMO management, mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and rapid response to pediatric cardiac emergencies. The consultant will also contribute to PCICU protocols, quality improvement, teaching, research, and coordinated care with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and allied healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage critically ill neonates, infants, and children in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU with complex congenital and acquired heart diseases.
* Provide pre-operative stabilization and optimization for pediatric cardiac patients awaiting surgery or interventional procedures.
* Deliver post-operative critical care following congenital heart surgery, including ventilation support, hemodynamic management, vasoactive therapy, fluid balance, rhythm monitoring, and complication prevention.
* Manage ECMO, mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, advanced hemodynamic assessment, and cardiac emergencies in high-acuity pediatric patients.
* Lead daily multidisciplinary PCICU rounds and coordinate individualized care plans based on clinical status, diagnostic findings, and treatment goals.
* Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, specialized nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and rehabilitation teams.
* Interpret complex diagnostic information, including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, cardiac imaging, laboratory trends, and bedside monitoring data.
* Provide on-call support for pediatric cardiac emergencies, urgent deterioration, post-operative complications, and critical decision-making.
* Communicate clearly and compassionately with families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, risks, progress, prognosis, and post-discharge care needs.
* Support quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, patient safety projects, clinical audits, and departmental growth.
* Mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, and critical care nursing staff through bedside teaching, case discussions, and structured clinical guidance.
* Participate in clinical research, CME activities, morbidity and mortality reviews, and academic programs related to pediatric cardiac intensive care.
* Maintain accurate ICU documentation, procedure notes, consent records, handover details, family communication records, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans in line with DHA and hospital standards.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is required.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure is mandatory.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Consultant-level experience managing complex congenital heart disease, ECMO cases, and post-operative pediatric cardiac ICU patients.
* Strong expertise in mechanical ventilation, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac emergencies, vasoactive medication management, and multidisciplinary ICU care.
* Ability to lead PCICU rounds, guide clinical teams, improve protocols, and contribute to departmental service development.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to support families during critical and emotionally complex care decisions.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
