Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac ICU will provide advanced critical care management for pediatric cardiac patients across pre-operative stabilization, post-operative congenital heart surgery recovery, interventional cardiology support, heart failure management, arrhythmia care, cardiomyopathy treatment, and emergency cardiac stabilization. The position requires strong clinical leadership, rapid interpretation of complex diagnostic data, careful family communication, and close collaboration with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare teams. The consultant will help develop and strengthen Pediatric Cardiac ICU services in Dubai through evidence-based protocols, quality improvement, academic contribution, and family-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive critical care management for neonates, infants, and children with congenital and acquired heart diseases.
* Lead pre-operative stabilization and optimization for pediatric cardiac patients awaiting surgery or interventional procedures.
* Manage post-operative care following congenital heart surgery, including hemodynamic support, ventilation, rhythm monitoring, and recovery planning.
* Care for patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures and support safe transition between catheterization, ICU, and step-down care.
* Manage complex pediatric cardiac conditions including heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, shock, respiratory compromise, and post-surgical complications.
* Supervise advanced PCICU interventions including ECMO, mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and organ support.
* Lead daily Pediatric Cardiac ICU rounds and coordinate individualized multidisciplinary care plans.
* Interpret complex diagnostic data including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, imaging results, and clinical monitoring information.
* Provide on-call coverage for pediatric cardiac emergencies and support urgent clinical decision-making when required.
* Collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied healthcare teams.
* Contribute to the strategic development and expansion of Pediatric Cardiac ICU services, clinical pathways, protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Mentor junior physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, and critical care nursing staff through bedside teaching, case review, and structured education.
* Communicate complex clinical information clearly and compassionately to families during critical illness, surgical recovery, long-term planning, and post-discharge follow-up.
* Participate in clinical research, audits, quality improvement projects, CME programs, departmental teaching, and national or international conference activity.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, procedure records, ICU notes, consent records, care plans, handover details, and follow-up summaries.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care or equivalent advanced PCICU training.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including consultant-level practice in a high-volume cardiac center.
* Strong expertise in managing complex congenital heart disease and post-operative pediatric cardiac ICU care.
* Proven experience with ECMO, mechanical ventilation, invasive monitoring, advanced hemodynamic support, and pediatric cardiac emergency management.
* Strong ability to interpret echocardiography data, hemodynamic studies, advanced imaging, laboratory findings, and critical care monitoring trends.
* Excellent leadership skills with the ability to guide multidisciplinary cardiac ICU teams in urgent and complex cases.
* Strong communication skills with families, physicians, nurses, trainees, and hospital leadership.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
