Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist will provide consultant-level leadership for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients throughout stabilization, intervention, surgery, recovery, and complex intensive care treatment. The position requires close integration of pediatric critical care, cardiology, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, and advanced life-support technologies. By directing multidisciplinary PCICU care and helping develop clinical pathways, the consultant will contribute to safer peri-operative management, stronger cardiac outcomes, and continued development of highly specialized pediatric critical care services.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive intensive care management for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital or acquired cardiac disease.
* Stabilize and optimize critically ill pediatric cardiac patients before congenital heart surgery or other major cardiac interventions.
* Direct post-operative intensive care following complex congenital cardiac surgical procedures.
* Manage patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures and provide critical care support when complications or instability arise.
* Diagnose and treat pediatric heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, and acute cardiovascular deterioration.
* Manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for pediatric cardiac patients requiring advanced cardiopulmonary support.
* Oversee invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjust respiratory strategies according to cardiovascular and postoperative requirements.
* Apply advanced hemodynamic monitoring to guide fluid management, vasoactive therapy, perfusion assessment, and cardiovascular support.
* Lead daily Pediatric Cardiac ICU rounds and establish coordinated multidisciplinary care plans.
* Interpret echocardiographic findings, hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, invasive monitoring data, and advanced cardiac imaging.
* Identify early signs of low cardiac output syndrome, postoperative bleeding, arrhythmia, organ dysfunction, infection, or other critical complications.
* Coordinate care with pediatric cardiologists, congenital cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and specialized nursing teams.
* Provide on-call consultant coverage for pediatric cardiac emergencies and rapidly deteriorating patients.
* Support clinical decision-making regarding escalation to ECMO or other advanced mechanical circulatory support.
* Communicate complex diagnoses, treatment progress, prognosis, and critical care decisions clearly and compassionately with families.
* Guide families through difficult treatment decisions, prolonged intensive care admissions, recovery planning, and post-discharge requirements.
* Promote family-centered care while maintaining high standards of clinical safety and communication.
* Contribute to strategic development and expansion of the Pediatric Cardiac ICU service.

* Mentor fellows, residents, junior physicians, and cardiac critical care nursing staff.

* Maintain accurate intensive care documentation, procedural records, treatment plans, and clinical handovers in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
Ideal Profile
* MD, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, or an equivalent recognized specialty.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care from an established cardiac center.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including substantial consultant-level practice in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Advanced expertise in the critical care management of complex congenital heart disease.
* Strong experience managing patients following congenital heart surgery.
* Proven competence in ECMO, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive support, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
