Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist will provide consultant-level leadership for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients across pre-operative stabilization, post-operative recovery, interventional cardiology support, and emergency cardiovascular care. The role requires close integration of pediatric critical care, cardiology, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, and advanced life-support technologies. By directing multidisciplinary PCICU management, the consultant will help improve hemodynamic stability, reduce perioperative complications, strengthen family communication, and support consistently high clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage critically ill neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiac disease in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.
* Provide pre-operative stabilization and optimization for patients awaiting congenital heart surgery or complex cardiac intervention.
* Direct post-operative critical care following congenital cardiac surgery.
* Manage patients requiring intensive monitoring after interventional cardiology procedures.
* Provide advanced cardiovascular support for heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, and acute hemodynamic deterioration.
* Manage ECMO for pediatric cardiac patients requiring extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support.
* Oversee invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation according to cardiac physiology and postoperative requirements.
* Apply advanced hemodynamic monitoring to guide fluid therapy, vasoactive support, perfusion management, and circulatory stabilization.
* Lead daily multidisciplinary PCICU rounds and establish individualized treatment priorities.
* Interpret echocardiographic findings, invasive hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, imaging, and physiological monitoring data.
* Recognize and manage low cardiac output syndrome, postoperative bleeding, arrhythmias, organ dysfunction, infection, and other critical complications.
* Coordinate care with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and specialized nursing teams.
* Support escalation to advanced mechanical circulatory support where clinically indicated.
* Respond to pediatric cardiac emergencies and provide consultant-level decision-making during rapidly evolving clinical situations.
* Develop individualized critical care plans based on anatomy, physiology, operative status, treatment response, and overall risk.
* Communicate complex clinical information, prognosis, treatment options, and critical decisions clearly and compassionately to families.
* Support family-centered care throughout prolonged or high-risk intensive care admissions.
* Maintain accurate progress notes, procedure documentation, treatment plans, clinical handovers, and family communication records.
* Contribute to development and revision of PCICU clinical pathways, emergency algorithms, and treatment protocols.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, outcome analysis, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
* Mentor junior physicians, fellows, residents, and critical care nursing staff.
* Participate in bedside teaching, simulation training, departmental education, and continuing medical education.
* Contribute to clinical research, publications, case presentations, and academic activities related to pediatric cardiac critical care.
* Support strategic development and expansion of Pediatric Cardiac ICU services.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, or another recognized relevant specialty.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is required.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience within a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Advanced expertise in congenital heart disease and post-operative pediatric cardiac intensive care.
* Strong experience managing ECMO and other forms of advanced cardiopulmonary support.
* Demonstrated competence in mechanical ventilation, vasoactive therapy, advanced monitoring, and cardiovascular stabilization.
