Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist will provide expert clinical leadership for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring highly coordinated ICU care before and after cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology procedures, and emergency cardiac events. The role has strong impact on survival, recovery, family confidence, and service quality because pediatric cardiac patients often need precise monitoring, fast clinical decisions, advanced organ support, and close teamwork between cardiology, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, ICU nursing, and allied health teams. The consultant will also support service expansion, clinical protocols, teaching, research, and quality improvement within the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive critical care management for neonates, infants, and children with congenital and acquired heart diseases.
* Stabilize and optimize pediatric cardiac patients before surgery, interventional cardiology procedures, or urgent transfer to higher-acuity care.
* Manage post-operative cardiac ICU patients following congenital heart surgery, including ventilation, hemodynamics, fluid balance, rhythm concerns, and recovery planning.
* Care for children undergoing interventional cardiology procedures, ensuring safe peri-procedural monitoring and post-procedure ICU management.
* Manage complex cardiac conditions including heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, shock states, and cardiac emergencies.
* Lead daily Pediatric Cardiac ICU rounds and coordinate multidisciplinary treatment plans with clear priorities, escalation decisions, and family communication.
* Manage advanced support including ECMO, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, invasive monitoring, and advanced hemodynamic assessment.
* Interpret and act on complex diagnostic data including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, cardiac imaging, and clinical monitoring data.
* Provide on-call coverage for pediatric cardiac emergencies, urgent ICU deterioration, resuscitation needs, and high-risk perioperative cases.
* Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied health teams.
* Contribute to strategic development and expansion of the Pediatric Cardiac ICU service through improved pathways, protocols, safety systems, and clinical quality standards.
* Develop and update clinical pathways for congenital heart disease, post-operative cardiac care, ECMO support, ventilation management, and emergency cardiac response.
* Mentor junior physicians, fellows, residents, critical care nurses, and clinical staff working in pediatric cardiac intensive care.
* Communicate complex clinical information to families with clarity, compassion, and cultural sensitivity during acute illness, recovery, and long-term care planning.
* Support family-centered care by involving parents and caregivers in shared decision-making, discharge preparation, and post-discharge follow-up.
* Participate in clinical research, audits, quality improvement projects, morbidity and mortality reviews, CME programs, and academic conferences.
* Teach and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary staff within the pediatric cardiac critical care program.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, ICU notes, procedure records, consent documentation, family meeting summaries, care plans, and follow-up recommendations.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is required.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including consultant-level practice in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
