Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist will provide advanced critical care for neonates, infants, and children with congenital and acquired heart diseases requiring highly specialized PCICU management. This role is essential for supporting pre-operative stabilization, post-operative recovery after congenital heart surgery, complex interventional cardiology cases, and urgent pediatric cardiac emergencies. Working in Abu Dhabi, the consultant will help strengthen Pediatric Cardiac ICU outcomes through precise clinical judgment, family-centered communication, multidisciplinary coordination, and evidence-based critical care leadership.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU, including neonates, infants, and children with complex cardiac conditions.
* Provide pre-operative stabilization and optimization for pediatric patients awaiting congenital heart surgery or interventional cardiology procedures.
* Deliver post-operative cardiac ICU care following congenital heart surgery, focusing on ventilation, hemodynamics, rhythm management, fluid balance, and recovery planning.
* Manage ECMO support, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive therapy, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and urgent cardiac emergencies.
* Lead daily multidisciplinary PCICU rounds and coordinate individualized treatment plans for high-risk pediatric cardiac patients.
* Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, specialized nursing teams, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Interpret complex diagnostic data including echocardiography findings, hemodynamic studies, laboratory trends, cardiac imaging, and ICU monitoring information.
* Support safe management of children with heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, shock states, post-operative complications, and critical congenital heart disease.
* Provide compassionate family communication, explaining clinical status, treatment decisions, risks, recovery goals, and long-term care planning in clear language.
* Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, patient safety programs, clinical pathways, and departmental growth.
* Mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, and PCICU nursing staff through bedside teaching, structured supervision, and clinical guidance.
* Participate in research, audits, CME activities, case reviews, morbidity and mortality discussions, and academic learning programs.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation including ICU notes, procedure records, family meeting summaries, treatment plans, consent details, and discharge planning information.
* Ensure compliance with DOH Abu Dhabi requirements, hospital policies, infection control standards, patient safety protocols, and international pediatric cardiac critical care practices.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is required.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience in a high-volume pediatric cardiac center.
* Eligibility for DOH Abu Dhabi Consultant licensure is mandatory for the actual work location.
* Strong expertise in congenital heart disease, ECMO, post-operative pediatric cardiac ICU care, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and complex cardiac emergencies.
* Experienced in managing neonates, infants, and children after congenital heart surgery and interventional cardiology procedures.
* Confident in interpreting echocardiography results, hemodynamic studies, cardiac imaging, ICU monitoring trends, and laboratory data.
* Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide multidisciplinary rounds, mentor clinical teams, and support service development.
* Excellent communication skills with families, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
* Fluency in English is required; Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Able to work effectively in a multicultural tertiary-care environment with calm judgment, resilience, empathy, and strong clinical discipline.
