Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon will provide advanced operative and perioperative care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease. The role covers detailed surgical assessment, complex congenital correction, emergency cardiac surgery, PCICU collaboration, long-term postoperative follow-up, and family counseling. By working closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, radiologists, and specialized nursing teams, the consultant will help improve survival, reduce complications, and strengthen the overall performance of pediatric cardiac surgical services.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgery for congenital and acquired heart disease.
* Correct congenital cardiac defects using established and advanced surgical techniques.
* Undertake open-heart procedures for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents according to clinical indication.
* Perform valve repair and valve replacement procedures in pediatric cardiac patients.
* Carry out arterial switch operations for suitable congenital cardiac conditions.
* Perform Tetralogy of Fallot repair and other complex congenital corrective procedures.
* Evaluate patients before surgery and review echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, CT, MRI, laboratory findings, and other diagnostic information.
* Develop individualized surgical plans based on cardiac anatomy, physiology, age, body weight, comorbidities, and procedural risk.
* Provide comprehensive pre-operative counseling and optimization in collaboration with cardiology and anesthesia teams.
* Coordinate intra-operative management with cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, theatre nurses, and surgical teams.
* Provide postoperative surgical oversight for patients recovering in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
* Work closely with intensivists to manage hemodynamic instability, bleeding, arrhythmias, respiratory complications, and other postoperative issues.
* Participate in emergency pediatric cardiac surgery and on-call coverage where required.
* Review postoperative imaging, laboratory trends, and clinical progress to guide recovery and further intervention.
* Conduct outpatient follow-up for children following cardiac surgery and monitor long-term functional outcomes.
* Counsel parents and families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, procedural risks, expected outcomes, recovery, and future treatment needs.
* Participate in multidisciplinary congenital heart conferences and complex surgical planning meetings.
* Collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, radiologists, neonatologists, and nursing teams.
* Maintain accurate operative reports, consultation notes, consent documentation, postoperative records, and follow-up plans.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality conferences, clinical audits, outcome reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Contribute to clinical research, publications, case presentations, and continuing medical education.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Support development and review of pediatric cardiac surgical protocols, patient pathways, and clinical standards.
* Maintain strict compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, ethical practice, and evidence-based surgical care.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Completion of recognized specialist training or residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification through the American Board, FRCS, Arab Board, European Board, or another recognized equivalent authority.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship experience as a Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon.
* Extensive operative experience in complex congenital and pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Proven competence in open-heart procedures, congenital defect correction, valve surgery, arterial switch operations, and Tetralogy of Fallot repair.
* Strong record of clinical outcomes within a high-volume tertiary-care or academic cardiac center.
* Experience managing critically ill postoperative pediatric cardiac patients in collaboration with PCICU teams.
* Previous GCC clinical experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
* Strong clinical judgment and ability to make timely surgical decisions in high-risk cases.
* Excellent leadership and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
