Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon will provide advanced surgical care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with complex congenital and acquired heart disease, including patients requiring cardiac transplantation. The role spans surgical evaluation, transplant candidate assessment, donor and recipient coordination, complex congenital repair, redo surgery, perioperative management, and long-term postoperative follow-up. Working closely with pediatric cardiology, intensive care, anesthesia, perfusion, transplant coordination, and mechanical circulatory support teams, the consultant will help improve survival, graft outcomes, and the overall performance of highly specialized pediatric cardiac services.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgery for congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease.
* Undertake high-risk neonatal cardiac procedures requiring advanced surgical planning and perioperative support.
* Perform primary and redo congenital heart surgery for children with complex anatomy or previous cardiac interventions.
* Lead surgical components of pediatric heart transplantation programs.
* Participate in donor heart evaluation and assess surgical suitability of potential organs.
* Contribute to recipient selection and multidisciplinary transplant candidacy discussions.
* Perform pediatric heart transplantation according to accepted surgical and transplant standards.
* Coordinate pre-transplant surgical preparation with cardiology, critical care, anesthesia, perfusion, and transplant teams.
* Provide comprehensive postoperative surgical management following pediatric cardiac transplantation.
* Monitor for early surgical complications including bleeding, graft dysfunction, vascular complications, and hemodynamic instability.
* Collaborate with transplant cardiology and intensive care teams on rejection surveillance, immunosuppression-related issues, and long-term graft management.
* Assess pediatric patients requiring advanced mechanical circulatory support as a bridge to recovery or transplantation.
* Participate in ECMO-supported care and other advanced circulatory support pathways where clinically indicated.
* Review echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, CT, MRI, hemodynamic data, and laboratory findings when planning surgery.
* Develop individualized operative strategies based on cardiac anatomy, physiology, age, previous procedures, and clinical risk.
* Participate in multidisciplinary congenital heart and transplant conferences.
* Coordinate surgical planning with pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, radiologists, and transplant coordinators.
* Provide consultant-level care for critically ill postoperative cardiac patients in collaboration with the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
* Counsel families regarding diagnosis, transplant eligibility, surgical options, operative risk, expected outcomes, recovery, and long-term follow-up.
* Supervise fellows, junior surgeons, residents, and surgical trainees.
* Maintain accurate operative reports, transplant documentation, consent records, treatment plans, and follow-up information.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality conferences, transplant outcome reviews, clinical audits, and quality improvement programs.

* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification or Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Recognized subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Additional advanced training or substantial clinical experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
