Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon will provide highly specialized surgical care for children with complex congenital and acquired cardiac conditions, including patients requiring pediatric heart transplantation and advanced mechanical circulatory support. The role has major clinical impact because early surgical decision-making, transplant readiness, precise operative care, ICU collaboration, and long-term cardiac follow-up can significantly improve survival and quality of life for pediatric patients. Working within a tertiary multidisciplinary cardiac team, the consultant will support surgical excellence, transplant program development, clinical research, and continuous improvement in pediatric cardiac services.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries including congenital heart defect repairs, redo cardiac operations, neonatal cardiac procedures, and high-risk pediatric cardiac interventions.
* Lead and participate in pediatric heart transplantation programs, including donor evaluation, recipient assessment, surgical transplantation, perioperative planning, and post-operative management.
* Provide preoperative and postoperative surgical care for pediatric cardiac patients, including surgical risk assessment, operative planning, recovery monitoring, and complication management.
* Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in close collaboration with ICU, pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, transplant coordination, nursing, and allied healthcare teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, transplant selection discussions, surgical planning meetings, morbidity reviews, and complex case reviews.
* Support advanced cardiac care pathways for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital heart disease, end-stage cardiac disease, failed previous repairs, or transplant-related needs.
* Ensure high standards of surgical safety, infection control, perioperative care, blood management, informed consent, and patient safety throughout the surgical pathway.
* Work with perfusionists and critical care teams in cases involving ECMO, ventricular assist devices, and advanced mechanical circulatory support where applicable.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, surgical trainees, residents, operating room staff, and multidisciplinary clinical team members.
* Educate families about diagnosis, surgical options, transplant pathways, risks, recovery expectations, ICU care, and long-term follow-up requirements.
* Contribute to clinical research, audits, publications, academic presentations, cardiac registry activity, and pediatric cardiac surgery service advancement.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, transplant documentation, perioperative records, ICU handover notes, consent forms, and follow-up plans in compliance with DOH Abu Dhabi regulations and hospital protocols.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, cardiac program development, clinical governance, patient safety projects, and continuing medical education activities.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Board Certification, Fellowship, or equivalent qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is required.
* Additional advanced training or proven experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or DOH Eligibility Letter in Cardiac Surgery.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery, including experience in transplant programs.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery, complex congenital heart surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and high-risk pediatric cardiac operations.
* Experience with ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support will be an advantage.
* Exposure to high-volume pediatric cardiac transplant centers is highly preferred.
* Academic and research background in pediatric cardiac surgery will be valued.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership ability, multidisciplinary collaboration, communication, and family counseling skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity tertiary care environment with complex pediatric cardiac patients.
