Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Surgery will provide expert surgical management for children with complex congenital heart disease, high-risk neonatal cardiac conditions, redo cardiac procedures, and pediatric heart transplantation needs. The role requires advanced operative skill, transplant pathway experience, perioperative leadership, and close collaboration with pediatric cardiology, ICU, anesthesia, perfusion, transplant coordination, nursing, and rehabilitation teams. The consultant will contribute to world-class pediatric cardiac care in Dubai through clinical excellence, surgical safety, research, teaching, and program development.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries, including congenital heart defect repairs, redo cardiac surgeries, and high-risk neonatal cardiac procedures.
* Lead and participate in pediatric heart transplantation programs, including donor evaluation, recipient selection, surgical transplantation, and post-operative surgical management.
* Provide expert preoperative and postoperative surgical care for pediatric cardiac patients.
* Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in collaboration with ICU, pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, transplant coordination, and nursing teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, surgical planning meetings, transplant selection discussions, and complex case reviews.
* Ensure high standards of surgical safety, infection control, perioperative care, clinical documentation, and patient safety.
* Apply advanced surgical judgment in neonatal cardiac surgery, congenital heart repair, transplant surgery, and high-acuity pediatric cardiac cases.
* Support ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support pathways where clinically required.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, surgical trainees, and clinical team members.
* Contribute to clinical research, audits, publications, academic activity, and continuing medical education in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Maintain accurate operative reports, consultation notes, treatment plans, transplant documentation, consent records, and follow-up reports.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, cardiac surgical outcome reviews, morbidity and mortality meetings, and pediatric cardiac program development.
* Communicate clearly with families regarding surgical plans, transplant pathways, risks, expected recovery, and long-term care needs.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by UAE healthcare authorities.
* Board certification, fellowship, or recognized specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Additional advanced training or proven experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
* Valid UAE Consultant License or eligibility in Cardiac Surgery.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery, including exposure to transplant programs.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery, complex congenital heart surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and high-risk pediatric cardiac operations.
* Experience with ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support will be an advantage.
* Exposure to high-volume pediatric cardiac transplant centers is preferred.
* Academic, research, publication, audit, or teaching background in pediatric cardiac surgery will strengthen the profile.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership ability, communication skills, documentation standards, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity tertiary care environment with complex pediatric cardiac cases.
