Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Surgery will provide advanced surgical management for children with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions in a tertiary care cardiac environment. The role covers surgical planning, congenital defect repair, neonatal cardiac procedures, redo cardiac surgery, emergency intervention, perioperative coordination, and long-term surgical follow-up. The consultant will work closely with pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and allied healthcare teams to support safe outcomes and strengthen pediatric cardiac surgical services in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries, including congenital heart defect repairs, neonatal cardiac surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and advanced cardiac surgical interventions.
* Lead surgical planning for high-risk congenital heart disease cases using clinical evaluation, imaging findings, multidisciplinary input, and evidence-based cardiac surgery standards.
* Manage perioperative care of pediatric cardiac patients in collaboration with pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and rehabilitation teams.
* Provide emergency surgical intervention for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring urgent operative management.
* Work closely with pediatric cardiologists in diagnostic review, therapeutic decision-making, case prioritization, and long-term cardiac care planning.
* Support post-operative recovery through coordinated ICU care, complication prevention, rhythm monitoring, hemodynamic review, and follow-up planning.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and surgical trainees through operative guidance, case discussion, and structured clinical teaching.
* Ensure strict adherence to surgical safety standards, infection control protocols, quality requirements, and hospital clinical governance frameworks.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, complex case reviews, morbidity and mortality meetings, and surgical outcome discussions.
* Contribute to clinical research, audits, publications, academic development, and continuous professional education in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Maintain accurate documentation, including consultation notes, operative reports, consent forms, perioperative plans, ICU handover notes, and follow-up records.
* Support a family-centered care approach by explaining surgical risks, expected outcomes, recovery needs, and long-term treatment plans clearly and compassionately.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery with subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Valid DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Consultant registration in Cardiac Surgery.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery, congenital heart defect repair, redo cardiac procedures, and complex pediatric cardiac operations.
* Experience working in high-volume pediatric cardiac centers or tertiary care cardiac hospitals is preferred.
* Experience with ECMO and mechanical circulatory support programs is an advantage.
* Strong ability to work in a high-acuity environment with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, and specialized nursing teams.
* Academic, audit, publication, or research background in pediatric cardiac surgery is preferred.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership, communication, family counselling, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Commitment to patient safety, evidence-based surgical practice, infection control, clinical governance, and continuous professional development.
