Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Surgery will provide expert surgical care for children with congenital and complex heart conditions requiring advanced operative treatment, emergency intervention, perioperative coordination, and long-term clinical planning. The position involves close collaboration with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, pediatric intensive care, perfusion, neonatology, nursing, radiology, and rehabilitation teams. The consultant will help strengthen pediatric cardiac services in Dubai by delivering safe surgical care, improving outcomes for high-risk congenital heart cases, and contributing to a tertiary-level cardiac program focused on evidence-based medicine and continuous improvement.
Core Duties
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries including congenital heart defect repair, neonatal cardiac surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and high-risk corrective or palliative operations.
* Manage surgical care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital heart disease and other complex pediatric cardiac conditions.
* Lead perioperative planning in collaboration with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, pediatric intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and allied healthcare teams.
* Participate in surgical planning for high-risk congenital heart disease cases using clinical assessment, imaging findings, catheterization data, risk evaluation, and multidisciplinary input.
* Provide emergency surgical intervention for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring urgent operative care.
* Work closely with pediatric cardiologists in diagnostic review, therapeutic decision-making, timing of surgery, and long-term treatment strategy.
* Oversee post-operative recovery in coordination with intensive care teams, ensuring careful monitoring of hemodynamics, ventilation, infection risk, wound healing, and cardiac function.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, surgical trainees, and clinical team members involved in pediatric cardiac care.
* Ensure adherence to surgical safety standards, infection control protocols, clinical governance requirements, and quality improvement systems.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, case discussions, morbidity and mortality reviews, and complex care meetings.
* Contribute to clinical research, audits, publications, academic development, and evidence-based pediatric cardiac surgery practice.
* Maintain accurate documentation, including operative notes, consent records, surgical plans, perioperative updates, discharge summaries, and follow-up recommendations.
* Communicate clearly with families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, procedural risks, expected outcomes, recovery pathways, and ongoing care needs.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Valid UAE Consultant license or eligibility for consultant-level cardiac surgery practice.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery and complex congenital heart surgery.
* Proven experience in congenital heart defect repair, redo cardiac surgery, emergency pediatric cardiac procedures, and high-risk surgical planning.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership ability, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a tertiary care cardiac center with pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, ICU, perfusion, and nursing teams.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to support families through sensitive and complex surgical decisions.
