Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Surgery will provide highly specialized surgical care for children with congenital and complex heart conditions, supporting safe outcomes in a high-acuity tertiary care environment. The role requires precise operative judgment, strong collaboration with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and rehabilitation teams, and the ability to manage critically ill patients before, during, and after surgery. This position contributes directly to advanced pediatric cardiac services, surgical safety, clinical governance, academic development, and improved survival and recovery outcomes for young cardiac patients.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries including congenital heart defect repair, neonatal cardiac surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and advanced corrective or palliative cardiac operations.
* Manage surgical care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital heart disease and other complex pediatric cardiac conditions.
* Lead operative planning for high-risk congenital heart disease cases using clinical assessment, imaging findings, cardiac catheterization data, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Provide emergency surgical intervention for critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring urgent or life-saving cardiac procedures.
* Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, radiologists, nurses, and allied healthcare teams.
* Support perioperative care planning, including pre-operative assessment, surgical risk discussion, intraoperative strategy, ICU handover, and post-operative recovery follow-up.
* Work with intensive care teams to manage complex post-operative cardiac patients, including hemodynamic instability, low cardiac output, respiratory support, and complication monitoring.
* Contribute clinical expertise to pediatric cardiac conferences, case reviews, multidisciplinary meetings, and treatment planning discussions.
* Ensure all surgical practice follows patient safety standards, infection control protocols, clinical governance requirements, and evidence-based cardiac surgery guidelines.
* Maintain accurate operative reports, consultation notes, consent documentation, ICU communication records, discharge input, and regulatory medical documentation.
* Supervise, train, and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, surgical trainees, and clinical staff involved in pediatric cardiac surgery services.
* Participate in clinical research, surgical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, publications, academic teaching, and service improvement activities.
* Support development of pediatric cardiac surgery pathways, quality indicators, risk review processes, and safety-focused departmental protocols.
* Maintain compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, hospital policies, ethical standards, and professional licensing requirements.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or eligibility letter in Cardiac Surgery is preferred.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
* Strong operative experience in neonatal cardiac surgery, complex congenital heart surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and high-risk pediatric cardiac cases.
* Proven ability to manage perioperative care in collaboration with pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, PICU, perfusion, and nursing teams.
* Experience in ECMO and mechanical circulatory support programs is highly desirable.
* Background in high-volume pediatric cardiac centers will be an advantage.
* Academic, audit, research, or publication experience in pediatric cardiac surgery is preferred.
* Strong surgical judgment, leadership ability, communication skills, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
* Ability to work confidently in a high-acuity tertiary care environment with complex and critically ill pediatric patients.
