Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Transplant will support advanced surgical care for children with complex congenital heart disease, end-stage cardiac conditions, and transplant-related needs. This position has major clinical impact because pediatric cardiac transplantation requires precise surgical judgment, coordinated donor and recipient evaluation, intensive perioperative planning, and close collaboration with ICU, cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and transplant coordination teams. The consultant will contribute to high-acuity cardiac services, quality improvement, research, and program development within Dubai’s specialist healthcare sector.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex pediatric cardiac surgeries including congenital heart defect repairs, redo cardiac surgeries, neonatal cardiac procedures, and high-risk corrective or palliative operations.
* Lead and participate in pediatric heart transplantation services, including donor evaluation, recipient selection, operative transplantation, and post-operative surgical management.
* Provide expert preoperative and postoperative care for infants, children, and adolescents undergoing cardiac surgery or transplant-related treatment.
* Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients in close coordination with pediatric intensive care, cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and allied healthcare teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, transplant review meetings, surgical planning discussions, and complex case decision-making.
* Review diagnostic imaging, cardiac catheterization findings, clinical history, transplant suitability, and risk factors to develop safe surgical plans.
* Support emergency and urgent surgical interventions for unstable pediatric cardiac patients requiring advanced operative care.
* Apply high standards of surgical safety, infection control, perioperative management, transplant governance, and evidence-based pediatric cardiac care.
* Contribute to ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support pathways where clinically required.
* Maintain accurate operative reports, transplant documentation, consultation records, consent notes, ICU communication, and regulatory medical records.
* Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, surgical trainees, and clinical staff involved in pediatric cardiac surgery and transplant care.
* Contribute to clinical research, surgical audits, publications, morbidity and mortality reviews, academic teaching, and professional education.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, cardiac program development, transplant pathway refinement, and service performance review.
* Maintain compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, hospital protocols, ethical standards, and professional licensing requirements.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
* Subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
* Additional advanced training or proven experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or eligibility letter in Cardiac Surgery is preferred.
* Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery, including transplant program exposure.
* Strong expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery, complex congenital heart surgery, redo cardiac procedures, and pediatric transplant surgery.
* Experience with donor assessment, recipient evaluation, transplant surgical planning, post-transplant care, and multidisciplinary transplant coordination.
* Knowledge of ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support is highly desirable.
* Exposure to high-volume pediatric cardiac transplant centers will be an advantage.
* Academic, audit, research, or publication background in pediatric cardiac surgery is preferred.
* Excellent surgical judgment, leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity tertiary care setting with critically ill pediatric cardiac patients.
