Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist will provide advanced interventional care for children with congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease, combining diagnostic cardiac catheterization with minimally invasive therapeutic procedures. The role covers structural defect closure, valvular intervention, vascular stenting, complex congenital procedures, inpatient and outpatient management, and emergency consultation. Working closely with pediatric cardiologists, congenital cardiac surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and imaging specialists, the consultant will help reduce the need for open surgery where appropriate and improve long-term cardiac outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform diagnostic and interventional pediatric cardiac catheterization procedures for congenital and acquired heart disease.
* Undertake atrial septal defect device closure using appropriate catheter-based techniques.
* Perform selected ventricular septal defect device closure procedures according to anatomical suitability and clinical indication.
* Carry out patent ductus arteriosus device closure in infants and children.
* Perform balloon valvuloplasty for appropriate congenital valvular stenosis.
* Conduct angioplasty for congenital or acquired vascular narrowing.
* Perform vascular and intracardiac stent placement where clinically indicated.
* Manage complex congenital cardiac interventions requiring advanced catheter techniques and multidisciplinary planning.
* Provide comprehensive inpatient consultations for pediatric cardiac patients requiring interventional assessment or post-procedure management.
* Conduct outpatient clinics for diagnosis, treatment planning, procedural follow-up, and long-term surveillance.
* Interpret echocardiography findings in conjunction with clinical presentation and catheterization data.
* Review ECG and Holter monitoring results for rhythm assessment and treatment planning.
* Evaluate cardiac CT and MRI findings when relevant to congenital anatomy and intervention strategy.
* Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences and congenital heart disease surgical planning meetings.
* Collaborate with pediatric cardiac surgeons to determine whether catheter-based, surgical, or hybrid treatment offers the best outcome.
* Provide on-call support for pediatric cardiac emergencies and urgent interventional cases.
* Manage procedural complications including arrhythmia, vascular injury, device-related complications, hemodynamic instability, and bleeding.
* Coordinate peri-procedural care with cardiac anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, nursing, and imaging teams.
* Explain diagnoses, catheter procedures, potential complications, expected benefits, and follow-up requirements to parents and families.
* Maintain accurate catheterization reports, procedural documentation, consent records, imaging findings, and follow-up plans.
* Contribute to clinical governance, outcome monitoring, quality improvement, and development of pediatric interventional cardiology protocols.
* Mentor fellows, residents, junior physicians, and clinical staff in pediatric cardiology and catheterization practice.
* Participate in research, clinical audits, academic presentations, and continuing medical education.
* Support teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows through case discussions, procedural training, and structured educational activities.
Ideal Profile
* MD, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatric Cardiology through the American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or another recognized equivalent authority.
* Fellowship training in Interventional Pediatric Cardiology from a recognized high-volume center.
* Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric interventional cardiology.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong documented procedural experience in pediatric cardiac catheterization.
* Proven expertise in ASD, VSD, and PDA device closure procedures.
* Advanced experience in balloon valvuloplasty, angioplasty, and stent implantation.
* Demonstrated competence in complex congenital heart disease interventions.
* Strong ability to interpret echocardiography, ECG, Holter monitoring, and relevant cardiac imaging.
* Experience practicing within a high-volume pediatric cardiac or congenital heart disease center is highly desirable.
* Strong leadership skills with the ability to coordinate complex cases across cardiology, cardiac surgery, intensive care, and neonatology teams.
* Academic research, teaching, publication, or clinical audit experience is advantageous.
* Excellent communication and patient-centered counseling skills.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is beneficial.
