Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Craniofacial Surgeon will provide specialized assessment, surgical correction, reconstructive planning, and long-term follow-up for pediatric patients with craniofacial differences, trauma-related deformities, skull abnormalities, and complex congenital facial conditions. The role carries strong clinical and emotional impact by improving function, appearance, airway safety, feeding support, speech development, facial growth, and quality of life for children and their families. Working within a multidisciplinary pediatric setting, the consultant will coordinate closely with neurosurgery, plastic surgery, ENT, orthodontics, speech therapy, pediatrics, nursing, and rehabilitation teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage congenital and acquired craniofacial conditions in infants, children, and adolescents.
* Perform detailed surgical assessments using clinical examination, medical history, facial growth evaluation, imaging review, functional assessment, and multidisciplinary input.
* Perform complex craniofacial procedures including correction of craniosynostosis, cleft-related craniofacial deformities, facial asymmetry, craniofacial trauma reconstruction, and congenital skull or facial abnormalities.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient consultations for pediatric craniofacial surgery cases requiring specialist evaluation, operative planning, or long-term follow-up.
* Develop individualized reconstructive treatment plans based on age, diagnosis, functional needs, craniofacial growth, family goals, and evidence-based surgical standards.
* Participate in craniofacial multidisciplinary clinics, case conferences, operative planning meetings, and staged treatment discussions.
* Collaborate with neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, ENT specialists, orthodontists, speech therapists, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Support coordinated care for children requiring staged craniofacial reconstruction, cleft-related management, skull remodeling, facial reconstruction, or post-trauma correction.
* Educate patients and families about diagnosis, surgical options, expected benefits, operative risks, postoperative care, recovery timelines, and long-term outcomes.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, imaging reviews, treatment plans, consent documentation, operative reports, postoperative records, and follow-up instructions in compliance with DOH Abu Dhabi regulations and hospital policies.
* Participate in clinical audits, research activity, academic teaching, case reviews, continuing medical education, and pediatric craniofacial service improvement.
* Ensure strict adherence to patient safety, infection control, surgical quality standards, ethical practice, clinical governance, and child-centered communication.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi.
* Board Certification, Fellowship, or equivalent qualification in Plastic Surgery, Craniofacial Surgery, or Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery.
* Valid DOH Consultant License or DOH Eligibility Letter in the relevant specialty.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in pediatric craniofacial surgery within a tertiary care hospital, children’s hospital, or academic medical institution.
* Strong expertise in pediatric craniofacial reconstructive and corrective surgical procedures.
* Practical experience managing craniosynostosis, cleft-related craniofacial deformities, facial asymmetry, craniofacial trauma, congenital skull abnormalities, and complex facial reconstruction cases.
* Experience in cleft and craniofacial multidisciplinary programs is preferred.
* Exposure to advanced craniofacial reconstruction and pediatric skull base procedures will be an advantage.
* Academic involvement, research activity, teaching experience, publications, or conference participation is preferred.
* Excellent surgical judgment, communication skills, family counseling ability, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural pediatric healthcare environment.
