Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Emergency Physician will provide rapid, consultant-level decision-making for children presenting with medical, surgical, traumatic, and life-threatening emergencies. The role combines frontline emergency care with resuscitation leadership, procedural expertise, multidisciplinary coordination, departmental quality improvement, and teaching. By working closely with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, intensivists, nursing teams, and emergency physicians, the consultant will help ensure timely diagnosis, safe stabilization, appropriate escalation, and efficient movement of children through the emergency care pathway.

Key Responsibilities

* Assess infants, children, and adolescents presenting with acute medical, surgical, and traumatic emergencies.
* Lead the management of respiratory distress, seizures, dehydration, severe infections, allergic reactions, and other urgent pediatric conditions.
* Provide immediate stabilization for critically ill or injured children requiring advanced emergency intervention.
* Lead pediatric resuscitation using evidence-based life-support principles.
* Perform advanced airway management when required during respiratory or cardiovascular emergencies.
* Establish vascular access and coordinate rapid medication, fluid, and blood product administration when clinically indicated.
* Perform lumbar puncture for appropriate diagnostic indications.
* Undertake fracture reduction and apply splints for selected musculoskeletal injuries.
* Carry out wound assessment, repair, and management according to injury complexity.
* Provide procedural sedation for painful or invasive emergency procedures where appropriate.
* Recognize clinical deterioration rapidly and escalate care to pediatric intensive care or relevant subspecialty teams.
* Manage pediatric trauma in coordination with surgeons, orthopedic teams, neurosurgeons, intensivists, radiologists, and anesthesia services.
* Coordinate complex emergency cases with pediatric cardiology, neurology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, and other subspecialties.
* Prioritize patient acuity and support safe, efficient flow through the Pediatric Emergency Department.
* Review laboratory investigations, imaging, and physiological monitoring data to guide emergency treatment decisions.
* Provide clear discharge instructions, safety-netting advice, and follow-up recommendations to families.
* Communicate diagnoses, procedures, treatment options, and prognosis sensitively during stressful or critical situations.
* Promote a child-friendly and culturally respectful emergency care environment.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, incident analysis, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Contribute to development and updating of pediatric emergency pathways, escalation protocols, and departmental guidelines.
* Mentor junior doctors, residents, fellows, and nursing staff working within emergency services.
* Teach medical students and trainees through bedside supervision, simulation, case reviews, and formal education.
* Participate in research, case presentations, continuing medical education, and professional conferences.
* Maintain complete and timely emergency documentation, procedure notes, clinical handovers, and treatment records.

Ideal Profile

* MD, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine or an equivalent recognized pathway.
* Board-trained Pediatricians with Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship experience may also be considered.
* Emergency Medicine specialists with recognized pediatric subspecialty training may be suitable.
* American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent certification is preferred.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including substantial consultant-level pediatric emergency practice.
* Strong expertise in pediatric resuscitation, acute care, trauma, and emergency stabilization.
* Demonstrated competence in airway management, vascular access, procedural sedation, fracture care, lumbar puncture, and wound management.
* Experience working in a high-volume tertiary pediatric emergency department is highly desirable.
* Strong ability to prioritize rapidly changing clinical situations and make timely, safe decisions.
* Proven multidisciplinary collaboration skills across pediatric medical, surgical, intensive care, and emergency teams.
* Leadership experience in clinical pathway development, audit, education, or quality improvement is advantageous.
* Excellent communication skills when supporting children and families during stressful or critical presentations.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
