Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist will provide advanced diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management for infants, children, and adolescents with malignant and non-malignant blood disorders. The role combines complex clinical decision-making, systemic cancer therapy, supportive care, transfusion management, treatment surveillance, and close family communication. By working with pediatricians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, pharmacists, nurses, transplant teams, and allied professionals, the consultant will help improve treatment outcomes while reducing complications and supporting children and families through demanding care pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage pediatric leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, anemia, clotting disorders, and other hematologic conditions.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, disease stage, molecular findings, clinical condition, and established pediatric protocols.
* Prescribe and supervise chemotherapy regimens for children and adolescents with cancer.
* Manage immunotherapy and other advanced systemic treatments where clinically indicated.
* Coordinate transfusion therapy and supportive hematology care for patients with complex blood disorders or treatment-related cytopenias.
* Monitor treatment response through clinical assessment, laboratory investigations, imaging, pathology, and relevant disease markers.
* Identify and manage treatment-related complications including infection, bleeding, organ toxicity, cytopenias, and metabolic abnormalities.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient management throughout diagnosis, treatment, recovery, surveillance, and long-term follow-up.
* Coordinate complex cases with pediatric surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, pharmacists, nurses, intensivists, and other subspecialists.
* Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and contribute to diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making.
* Assess children with suspected inherited or acquired blood disorders and establish appropriate diagnostic pathways.
* Manage anemia, platelet abnormalities, coagulation disorders, and other non-malignant pediatric hematology conditions.
* Support patients who may require bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in collaboration with transplant specialists.
* Provide ongoing surveillance for relapse, late treatment effects, chronic complications, and survivorship concerns.
* Explain diagnoses, treatment strategies, potential complications, prognosis, and follow-up requirements clearly to parents and families.
* Deliver compassionate counseling and emotional support throughout diagnosis, active treatment, and survivorship.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, treatment plans, chemotherapy records, transfusion documentation, and follow-up reports.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement activities, and departmental governance.
* Contribute to teaching and mentoring of residents, junior physicians, fellows, and multidisciplinary clinical staff.
* Participate in clinical research, academic teaching, case studies, publications, and continuing medical education where opportunities arise.
* Maintain practice standards consistent with evidence-based pediatric hematology and oncology guidelines, hospital policies, and UAE healthcare requirements.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Completed specialty training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
* UK Certificate of Completion of Training, American Board Certification, Canadian Board Certification, or another recognized equivalent qualification.
* Minimum 5 years of post-board experience in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
* Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong expertise in pediatric cancer management and complex hematologic disorders.
* Demonstrated experience with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transfusion therapy, and supportive oncology care.
* Strong understanding of evidence-based pediatric treatment protocols and long-term survivorship management.
* Experience managing leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, anemia, and coagulation disorders.
* Experience with bone marrow transplantation or advanced pediatric oncology therapies is highly desirable.
* Previous work within an internationally accredited tertiary hospital is advantageous.
