This role is suited for a consultant who can deliver evidence-based treatment, oversee chemotherapy and supportive care, coordinate multidisciplinary care pathways, and provide compassionate family-centered support for children and adolescents throughout diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and long-term follow-up.

Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Hematology Oncology will provide specialist care for children and adolescents facing serious hematologic and oncologic conditions where timely diagnosis, accurate staging, careful treatment planning, and ongoing monitoring are critical. The position has strong clinical impact because pediatric cancer and blood disorder management requires close coordination with oncology nurses, pharmacists, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, pediatricians, transfusion services, and allied healthcare teams. Through advanced clinical judgment, emotional sensitivity, and structured follow-up, the consultant will support safer outcomes, stronger continuity of care, and improved quality of life for young patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

* Diagnose and manage pediatric hematologic and oncologic conditions including leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, anemia, clotting disorders, bone marrow disorders, and other complex blood diseases.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, disease stage, risk classification, clinical protocols, patient condition, and evidence-based pediatric oncology standards.
* Administer, supervise, and monitor chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transfusion therapy, supportive care, infection prevention, symptom control, and treatment-related complication management.
* Coordinate care with pediatricians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, pharmacists, oncology nurses, laboratory teams, psychologists, dietitians, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Monitor patient progress, laboratory results, imaging findings, treatment response, toxicity, relapse risk, and long-term complications while adjusting care plans when needed.
* Provide compassionate counselling, education, and emotional support to children, adolescents, parents, and families throughout diagnosis, treatment, remission, relapse management, and follow-up care.
* Use advanced diagnostic tools, pathology reports, molecular testing, imaging, bone marrow evaluation, and clinical assessment to support accurate treatment decisions.
* Participate in tumor boards, multidisciplinary case discussions, departmental meetings, clinical audits, morbidity reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records, treatment protocols, consent documentation, chemotherapy plans, transfusion records, follow-up notes, and regulatory documentation.
* Stay current with developments in pediatric hematology, pediatric oncology, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, bone marrow transplantation, and international clinical guidelines.
* Support safe handling and governance of chemotherapy, transfusion practices, infection control, neutropenic care, and pediatric oncology safety standards.
* Contribute to teaching, mentoring, clinical supervision, and professional development of junior doctors, residents, nurses, and allied health staff when required.
* Engage in clinical research, academic teaching, publications, continuing medical education, and evidence-based service improvement.
* Promote patient-centered and family-centered care while maintaining confidentiality, ethical practice, and high standards of clinical communication.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Completion of specialty training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
* Recognized specialist qualification such as UK Certificate of Completion of Training, American Board Certification, Canadian Board Certification, or equivalent.
* DOH Abu Dhabi License or eligibility is mandatory where required by the final healthcare facility.
* Minimum 5 years of post-board experience in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
* Strong expertise in pediatric cancer care, hematologic disorders, chemotherapy protocols, transfusion therapy, supportive care, and advanced treatment planning.
* Experience managing leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, anemia, clotting disorders, complex blood diseases, and treatment-related complications.
* Experience in bone marrow transplantation and advanced pediatric oncology treatments is highly desirable.
* Background in internationally accredited hospitals, tertiary healthcare centers, or specialized pediatric oncology units is preferred.
* Participation in clinical research, academic teaching, publications, or oncology program development will be an advantage.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, counselling, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Compassionate and empathetic approach toward pediatric patients, adolescents, parents, and families.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment with complex cases and emotionally sensitive patient journeys.
* Fluency in English is mandatory, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
* Strong commitment to evidence-based care, patient safety, clinical governance, accurate documentation, and continuous professional development.
