Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Intensive Care provides specialist clinical leadership for critically ill pediatric patients requiring intensive monitoring, advanced respiratory support, hemodynamic stabilization, emergency intervention, and multidisciplinary treatment planning. The role is central to patient safety in the PICU, where timely assessment and precise management can directly influence survival, recovery, and long-term outcomes.
This position is ideal for a consultant with strong international training, high-acuity PICU exposure, and the ability to guide junior physicians and clinical teams in a modern tertiary healthcare setting. The consultant will contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, continuing medical education, and the ongoing development of pediatric critical care services.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage critically ill neonates, infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
* Provide advanced life support and specialist critical care management for pediatric patients with respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, trauma, neurological emergencies, post-operative complications, and complex medical conditions.
* Perform and supervise pediatric critical care procedures, including endotracheal intubation, central venous access, arterial line placement, ventilator management, sedation, and invasive monitoring.
* Lead daily PICU reviews, evaluate patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and coordinate individualized care based on clinical response and evidence-based practice.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary care with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency teams, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Respond to pediatric emergencies, rapid response calls, clinical deterioration, and time-sensitive critical care situations.
* Manage advanced pediatric ventilation strategies, sedation protocols, fluid therapy, vasoactive support, infection control measures, and organ-support pathways.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, and PICU staff while promoting safe clinical practice and structured learning.
* Maintain accurate patient documentation, progress notes, procedure records, medication plans, family discussions, and discharge or transfer summaries.
* Participate in clinical governance, morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, quality improvement projects, and continuing medical education activities.
* Communicate clearly with families regarding diagnosis, treatment priorities, clinical risks, expected progress, and ongoing care plans.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, medical degree, or equivalent qualification with specialization in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
* Board certification, CCT, fellowship, European Board, American Board, or equivalent recognized specialist qualification.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level PICU experience.
* Experience in tertiary-care, internationally accredited, or high-acuity pediatric intensive care settings is preferred.
* Active DHA license or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure is preferred.
* UK CCT, Irish, European, Australian, Canadian, or American Board certification is highly desirable.
* Strong expertise in pediatric ventilation, sedation, advanced critical care procedures, emergency stabilization, and PICU clinical leadership.
* Ability to manage complex pediatric cases with calm judgment, strong prioritization, and evidence-based decision-making.
* Excellent communication, leadership, teamwork, family counselling, and clinical documentation skills.
