Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Intensive Care will provide specialist leadership in a modern PICU environment, supporting critically ill children with respiratory failure, sepsis, trauma, neurological emergencies, complex post-operative needs, shock, and multi-organ dysfunction. The role combines direct patient care, emergency response, clinical team coordination, family communication, and continuous improvement of pediatric critical care standards.
This position has direct impact on survival, recovery quality, patient safety, and family confidence. The consultant will help strengthen PICU performance through evidence-based protocols, mentoring, quality improvement, clinical education, and the safe use of advanced pediatric intensive care technologies.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver expert critical care to high-acuity pediatric patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
* Manage critically ill infants, children, and adolescents with complex medical, surgical, respiratory, neurological, infectious, and post-operative conditions.
* Perform and supervise advanced pediatric intensive care procedures, including mechanical ventilation, ECMO support where available, invasive monitoring, airway management, vascular access, sedation, and emergency stabilization.
* Design individualized treatment plans based on patient condition, laboratory trends, imaging findings, organ support needs, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
* Monitor patient progress closely and adjust treatment plans to improve recovery, reduce complications, and support safe transition from intensive care.
* Collaborate with pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.
* Lead or support multidisciplinary rounds, clinical handovers, escalation decisions, and family updates for complex PICU cases.
* Mentor junior doctors, residents, nurses, and allied health staff in pediatric emergency response, intensive care protocols, and safe clinical practice.
* Contribute to clinical education programs, simulation training, bedside teaching, and continuing professional development activities.
* Lead quality improvement initiatives, support audit activity, and help uphold international pediatric intensive care standards.
* Participate in clinical research and stay updated with current developments in PICU technology, critical care medicine, ECMO, ventilation strategies, and patient safety.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedure records, treatment plans, progress reports, family communication records, and discharge summaries in line with DHA requirements.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or equivalent specialist qualification in Pediatric Intensive Care or Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
* Western training from the USA, UK, Canada, or an equivalent recognized healthcare system is mandatory.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-board experience in a consultant PICU role.
* Active DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant licensure.
* Proven expertise in advanced pediatric critical care, mechanical ventilation, ECMO support, invasive monitoring, emergency stabilization, and high-acuity PICU management.
* Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced intensive care environment.
* Excellent communication and family counselling skills with a compassionate, patient-centered care philosophy.
* Ability to contribute to clinical education, protocol development, quality improvement, and research activity.
