Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Intensive Care will provide specialized intensive care for critically ill pediatric patients requiring advanced monitoring, organ support, emergency stabilization, and complex treatment planning. The role covers pediatric emergencies, respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, trauma, post-operative critical care, advanced ventilation, sedation, invasive line placement, and rapid response management. The consultant will work closely with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare teams to support safe outcomes and strengthen PICU service quality in Dubai.

Key Responsibilities

* Diagnose and manage critically ill neonates, infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
* Provide advanced life support, resuscitation, stabilization, and ongoing critical care management for high-acuity pediatric patients.
* Manage pediatric ventilation, oxygenation strategies, sedation plans, hemodynamic support, fluid balance, infection control, and organ support.
* Perform and supervise pediatric critical care procedures including intubation, central venous access, arterial line placement, ventilator management, and emergency stabilization.
* Respond to pediatric emergencies, rapid response calls, clinical deterioration, and urgent PICU referrals.
* Develop individualized treatment and care plans based on patient condition, diagnostic results, multidisciplinary input, and evidence-based medical practice.
* Coordinate care with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, radiologists, nursing teams, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists.
* Lead or contribute to multidisciplinary PICU rounds, ensuring clear treatment priorities, timely escalation, and effective family communication.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, and PICU staff through bedside teaching, case discussion, and clinical guidance.
* Maintain accurate patient documentation, including ICU notes, procedure records, consent forms, handover details, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans.
* Participate in clinical governance, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement projects, audits, and continuing medical education activities.
* Support patient safety, infection prevention, ethical care, family-centered practice, and continuous improvement in PICU operations.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Specialist training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
* Board certification, CCT, fellowship, European Board, American Board, or equivalent recognized qualification in pediatric critical care or a related pediatric intensive care pathway.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level PICU experience.
* Experience in tertiary-care hospitals, internationally accredited hospitals, or high-acuity pediatric intensive care settings is preferred.
* Strong expertise in pediatric ventilation, sedation, resuscitation, invasive procedures, emergency stabilization, and advanced critical care management.
* Confident ability to manage complex pediatric cases involving respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, trauma, post-operative care, and multi-organ support.
* Strong leadership, communication, clinical decision-making, teamwork, and family counselling skills.
* Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary pediatric teams in a fast-paced ICU environment.
* Commitment to clinical governance, patient safety, ethical practice, continuous professional development, and high-quality pediatric critical care.
