Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Intensive Care will lead the management of critically ill infants, children, and adolescents requiring advanced life support, continuous monitoring, and coordinated specialist intervention. The role involves high-acuity decision-making for complex medical and surgical pediatric cases, close collaboration with pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare teams, and active participation in service quality, education, and research. The consultant will help strengthen PICU services in Dubai through safe intensive care practice, advanced clinical protocols, and compassionate communication with families during critical situations.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver expert intensive care for critically ill pediatric patients with complex medical, surgical, trauma, respiratory, neurological, infectious, and postoperative conditions.
* Lead daily PICU rounds, clinical decision-making, escalation planning, and multidisciplinary treatment discussions.
* Manage advanced pediatric critical care interventions including mechanical ventilation, ECMO support, invasive monitoring, hemodynamic stabilization, and organ support.
* Design individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, clinical condition, laboratory results, imaging, response to therapy, and family needs.
* Monitor patient progress closely and adjust care plans to support stabilization, recovery, safe transfer, or step-down care.
* Collaborate with pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, intensivists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.
* Communicate clearly and compassionately with families regarding prognosis, treatment options, critical care decisions, and ongoing progress.
* Mentor junior doctors, fellows, residents, nurses, and clinical staff through bedside teaching, case review, and structured education.
* Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives, morbidity reviews, clinical audits, patient safety programs, and PICU protocol development.
* Maintain accurate medical records, critical care notes, procedure documentation, consent records, and multidisciplinary care plans.
* Support clinical education programs and contribute to a culture of evidence-based pediatric intensive care.
* Participate in research activity, CME programs, case presentations, and professional development related to PICU advancements.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, or an equivalent recognized consultant-level qualification.
* Western training from the USA, UK, Canada, or an equivalent healthcare system is mandatory.
* Eligible for DHA Consultant licensure with the Dubai Health Authority.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-board experience in a consultant PICU role.
* Proven expertise in advanced pediatric critical care techniques, including mechanical ventilation, ECMO, invasive monitoring, and high-acuity patient stabilization.
* Strong clinical background in managing complex pediatric medical and surgical intensive care cases.
* Demonstrated leadership ability within a multidisciplinary PICU or tertiary-care hospital environment.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to support families during stressful and critical situations.
* Strong commitment to patient safety, evidence-based care, continuous learning, clinical governance, and international standards of pediatric intensive care.
