Role Context
The
Consultant Pediatric Neuro-Oncologist will provide specialist care for children and adolescents with primary CNS tumors and other complex neuro-oncologic conditions. The position involves directing treatment across diagnosis, active therapy, complication management, rehabilitation, and long-term survivorship. Working alongside pediatric oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, and psychosocial teams, the consultant will help shape coordinated treatment pathways that improve clinical outcomes while reducing the long-term impact of cancer therapy on developing children.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage pediatric central nervous system tumors including medulloblastoma, ependymoma, gliomas, germ cell tumors, craniopharyngioma, and rare childhood brain tumors.
* Develop individualized treatment strategies based on tumor pathology, molecular characteristics, disease stage, imaging findings, patient age, and overall clinical condition.
* Lead systemic treatment planning involving chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and other evidence-based pediatric oncology approaches.
* Coordinate radiotherapy planning with radiation oncologists while considering disease control and potential long-term developmental effects.
* Work closely with pediatric neurosurgeons on biopsy, tumor resection, surgical timing, and postoperative treatment pathways.
* Provide inpatient management for children receiving intensive cancer therapy or experiencing complex neurological and systemic complications.
* Conduct specialized outpatient clinics for active treatment, disease surveillance, treatment response assessment, and survivorship follow-up.
* Monitor and manage neurotoxicity, endocrine complications, neurological deficits, cognitive effects, and other adverse consequences of therapy.
* Coordinate long-term follow-up for survivors at risk of recurrence, late treatment effects, endocrine dysfunction, neurocognitive impairment, or functional limitations.
* Present complex cases at pediatric tumor boards and multidisciplinary neuro-oncology conferences.
* Review pathology, molecular diagnostic findings, neuroimaging, treatment response data, and clinical progression when determining ongoing management.
* Collaborate with pediatric neurologists, oncologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, pathologists, endocrinologists, rehabilitation physicians, psychologists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Explain diagnosis, prognosis, treatment alternatives, potential complications, and long-term care requirements clearly and compassionately to patients and families.
* Support shared decision-making while addressing the emotional, developmental, and psychosocial needs of children undergoing cancer treatment.
* Work with psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, rehabilitation teams, and other support services to provide comprehensive family-centered care.
* Contribute to the strategic expansion and continuous improvement of pediatric neuro-oncology services.
* Develop and review clinical protocols, treatment pathways, quality standards, and multidisciplinary care processes.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, institutional governance, and patient safety initiatives.
* Mentor junior physicians, fellows, residents, and other clinical staff involved in pediatric oncology care.
* Participate in clinical trials, translational research, institutional studies, case reports, and collaborative pediatric oncology research programs.
* Teach medical students, residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary staff through structured education, case discussions, and continuing medical education activities.
* Represent the pediatric neuro-oncology service at scientific meetings, professional forums, and academic conferences.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Pediatric Oncology-Hematology through the American Board, Canadian Board, or another recognized equivalent authority.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology from an established specialist center.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience, including substantial consultant-level practice.
* Demonstrated expertise in treating complex pediatric CNS tumors and coordinating multimodal therapy.
* Strong knowledge of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy integration, and surgical treatment planning.
* Experience managing treatment-related neurotoxicity, endocrine complications, and long-term survivorship issues.
* Familiarity with modern molecular diagnostics and risk-adapted pediatric brain tumor treatment approaches.
