Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmologist will provide comprehensive eye care for children with congenital, developmental, neurological, refractive, and acquired ophthalmic disorders. The role combines detailed pediatric eye examination, specialized diagnostics, surgical treatment, long-term visual rehabilitation, and multidisciplinary coordination. By working closely with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatologists, orthoptists, and other specialists, the consultant will help preserve vision, improve ocular alignment, support visual development, and manage complex eye conditions from infancy through adolescence.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of pediatric ophthalmic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents.
* Assess and treat strabismus using appropriate medical, optical, orthoptic, or surgical approaches.
* Manage amblyopia through individualized visual rehabilitation and follow-up strategies.
* Diagnose congenital and developmental cataracts and determine appropriate surgical timing and treatment.
* Evaluate and manage pediatric glaucoma and other conditions associated with elevated intraocular pressure.
* Assess refractive disorders and coordinate corrective lenses or other appropriate treatment.
* Diagnose and manage retinal disorders affecting pediatric patients.
* Perform comprehensive pediatric eye examinations adapted to age, development, and clinical condition.
* Use specialized ophthalmic diagnostic techniques to assess visual acuity, ocular motility, alignment, refraction, anterior segment, and posterior segment findings.
* Perform pediatric strabismus surgery and other age-appropriate ophthalmic procedures within the consultant\'s scope of expertise.
* Develop individualized medical and surgical treatment plans based on diagnosis, visual development, and long-term functional needs.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation for children requiring specialist ophthalmic assessment.
* Support neonatal and pediatric intensive care units when ophthalmology consultation is required.
* Collaborate with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists in complex cases.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences involving congenital syndromes, neurological conditions, and developmental disorders.
* Educate parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment choices, visual prognosis, and preventive eye care.
* Monitor postoperative recovery, visual development, ocular alignment, and recurrence or progression of disease.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative records, diagnostic findings, consent documentation, and follow-up plans.
* Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, morbidity reviews, and ophthalmic governance activities.
* Contribute to research, teaching, departmental education, and continuing medical education programs.
* Maintain evidence-based clinical practice, patient safety, infection control, and professional standards throughout care delivery.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.
* Board Certification, CCT, Fellowship, or equivalent recognized qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Fellowship or subspecialty training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in Pediatric Ophthalmology.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong expertise in pediatric ophthalmic surgery and management of complex childhood eye disorders.
* Demonstrated experience treating strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, refractive disorders, and retinal disease.
* Experience working within tertiary-care or children\'s hospitals is strongly preferred.
* Western Board Certification such as UK CCT, FRCOphth, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or equivalent is highly desirable.
