Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmologist plays a critical role in preserving and improving vision for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital, developmental, and complex ophthalmic conditions. This position supports long-term visual health outcomes through specialist diagnosis, advanced surgical care, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary pediatric healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and treat pediatric eye conditions including strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, and developmental eye disorders
* Perform pediatric ophthalmic surgeries including strabismus correction, pediatric cataract surgery, anterior segment procedures, and congenital glaucoma interventions
* Conduct retinopathy of prematurity screening and provide timely treatment where required
* Manage complex pediatric visual disorders through detailed clinical assessments and personalized treatment planning
* Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, neurologists, and other subspecialists for integrated patient care
* Provide family counseling regarding diagnosis, treatment pathways, recovery expectations, and long-term visual care
* Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with hospital quality standards and ophthalmology protocols
* Participate in academic activities, teaching initiatives, and specialist training programs
* Support clinical governance, audits, and continuous improvement projects within the ophthalmology department
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree with specialization in Ophthalmology
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus is mandatory
* Board Certification or equivalent specialist qualification is required
* Eligible for licensure with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi or UAE licensing authority
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship Consultant-level clinical experience
* Strong expertise in pediatric surgical ophthalmology and complex anterior segment care
* Excellent patient and family communication skills with compassionate pediatric care approach
* Strong commitment to academic development and multidisciplinary collaboration
