Role Context
The
Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmologist will provide advanced diagnostic, medical, and surgical eye care for children with common, complex, congenital, developmental, and vision-threatening ophthalmic conditions. The role is important for early detection, visual development, surgical correction, family education, and long-term outcomes in pediatric patients. Working within a multidisciplinary environment with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatal teams, intensive care units, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals, the consultant will help strengthen pediatric eye care through clinical precision, modern ophthalmic technology, and evidence-based treatment planning.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage pediatric ophthalmic conditions including strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, refractive disorders, retinal diseases, and complex childhood eye conditions.
* Perform comprehensive pediatric eye examinations using age-appropriate assessment methods, visual function evaluation, ocular alignment review, refraction, anterior segment assessment, and retinal examination.
* Conduct specialized diagnostic procedures to support accurate diagnosis, surgical planning, treatment monitoring, and long-term visual development.
* Perform pediatric ophthalmic surgeries including strabismus surgery, congenital cataract procedures, and other age-appropriate surgical interventions within approved clinical privileges.
* Develop individualized treatment and management plans based on clinical findings, visual needs, age, developmental stage, family concerns, and international best practice standards.
* Provide specialist consultation for neonatal intensive care units, pediatric intensive care units, and pediatric inpatient services when required.
* Collaborate with pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, optometrists, orthoptists, nurses, and other multidisciplinary specialists.
* Manage complex cases requiring coordinated care, including children with genetic disorders, neurological conditions, developmental concerns, congenital eye abnormalities, or multi-system disease.
* Educate patients and families about diagnosis, treatment options, surgical risks, patching or glasses compliance, preventive eye care, recovery expectations, and long-term follow-up.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, clinical governance meetings, morbidity reviews, quality improvement programs, and patient safety initiatives.
* Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, orthoptists, optometrists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Contribute to research activities, teaching programs, continuing medical education, academic presentations, and pediatric ophthalmology service development.
* Maintain accurate clinical notes, diagnostic reports, operative records, consent documentation, treatment plans, and follow-up records in line with organizational and regulatory standards.
* Uphold ethical medical practice, patient confidentiality, infection control, surgical safety, child safeguarding awareness, and evidence-based pediatric ophthalmic care.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from an accredited institution.
* Board Certification, CCT, Fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Fellowship or subspecialty training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
* Minimum 5 years of experience practicing as a Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmologist.
* Eligibility for medical licensure in Qatar.
* Western Board Certification such as UK CCT, FRCOphth, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or equivalent is preferred.
* Strong expertise in pediatric ophthalmic surgery and management of complex pediatric eye disorders.
* Experience in strabismus surgery, amblyopia care, pediatric cataract management, pediatric glaucoma evaluation, refractive disorder treatment, and retinal disease assessment.
* Previous experience in tertiary care hospitals, children’s hospitals, or internationally accredited healthcare institutions is highly preferred.
* Academic, research, teaching, publication, or fellowship supervision experience will be an advantage.
