Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Ophthalmology will provide comprehensive eye care for infants, children, and adolescents with pediatric vision disorders, congenital eye conditions, developmental abnormalities, amblyopia, strabismus, pediatric cataracts, congenital glaucoma, and complex anterior segment conditions. The role also supports care for ocular inflammatory disorders and uveitis where relevant, requiring strong diagnostic ability, surgical expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to teaching, research, and patient-centered outcomes in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage pediatric eye conditions, including amblyopia, strabismus, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, developmental eye disorders, and complex anterior segment conditions.
* Provide comprehensive ophthalmic assessment for infants, children, and adolescents using age-appropriate diagnostic methods and evidence-based clinical pathways.
* Perform pediatric ophthalmology procedures, including strabismus surgery, pediatric cataract surgery, congenital glaucoma procedures, and complex anterior segment surgeries.
* Provide retinopathy of prematurity screening, monitoring, and treatment according to clinical need and recognized ophthalmology standards.
* Manage congenital and developmental eye disorders with individualized treatment plans, follow-up schedules, and family education.
* Evaluate and treat complex uveitis and ocular inflammatory disorders when clinically required.
* Manage ocular and systemic immunosuppression therapy in coordination with rheumatology and other relevant medical specialties.
* Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic ophthalmology procedures to support accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
* Collaborate with pediatricians, neonatologists, rheumatologists, retina specialists, orthoptists, optometrists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists.
* Provide clear counselling to parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment options, surgical planning, expected outcomes, and long-term follow-up.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, surgical reports, investigation records, treatment plans, consent documentation, and follow-up records.
* Contribute to teaching, academic initiatives, research activity, clinical audits, and professional development within the ophthalmology service.
* Support multidisciplinary case discussions and service improvement efforts focused on pediatric eye care and specialist ophthalmology outcomes.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or equivalent recognized specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
* Additional fellowship training or strong clinical experience in Uveitis or Ocular Immunology will be an advantage.
* Eligible for consultant licensure with the relevant UAE healthcare authority.
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship clinical experience in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, or related specialist ophthalmology practice.
* Strong surgical experience in strabismus surgery, pediatric cataracts, congenital glaucoma, and complex anterior segment procedures.
* Experience in ROP screening and treatment is required.
* Strong understanding of amblyopia management, congenital eye disorders, pediatric visual development, and long-term ophthalmic follow-up.
* Experience managing complex uveitis, ocular inflammation, or immunosuppression therapy is preferred.
* Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a specialist eye care or tertiary hospital setting.
* Strong communication, family counselling, academic, research, and clinical documentation skills.
