Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Ophthalmology will provide comprehensive diagnostic, medical, and surgical eye care for infants, children, and adolescents with a broad range of ophthalmic conditions. The role includes pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus care, amblyopia management, congenital and developmental eye disorder treatment, pediatric cataract and glaucoma surgery, ROP screening and treatment, and support for complex uveitis and ocular inflammatory cases. The consultant will help strengthen advanced eye care services in Dubai by combining precise clinical diagnosis, safe surgical practice, multidisciplinary coordination, and patient-centered family communication.

What You’ll Do

* Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for pediatric patients with congenital, developmental, inflammatory, and complex eye conditions.
* Manage strabismus, amblyopia, refractive concerns, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, anterior segment abnormalities, and other pediatric ophthalmic disorders.
* Perform surgical procedures including strabismus surgery, pediatric cataract surgery, congenital glaucoma procedures, and complex anterior segment surgeries.
* Conduct ROP screening, treatment planning, follow-up care, and coordination with neonatal teams for premature infants at risk of retinopathy of prematurity.
* Diagnose and manage congenital and developmental eye disorders using clinical examination, imaging, visual assessment, and age-appropriate diagnostic methods.
* Provide expert care for patients with complex uveitis and ocular inflammatory disorders when clinically required.
* Manage ocular and systemic immunosuppression therapy in coordination with rheumatology and other medical specialties.
* Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for pediatric ophthalmology and ocular inflammatory disease cases.
* Collaborate with subspecialists including neonatology, pediatrics, rheumatology, neurology, genetics, retina, glaucoma, cornea, anesthesia, nursing, and orthoptics teams.
* Develop individualized treatment plans that consider the child’s age, visual development, systemic health, family needs, and long-term outcomes.
* Communicate clearly with parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, surgical options, risks, treatment timelines, and follow-up requirements.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, consent records, surgical notes, treatment plans, imaging reports, and follow-up recommendations.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, teaching activities, clinical audits, research initiatives, and academic development programs.
* Support patient safety, ethical practice, infection control, clinical governance, and evidence-based ophthalmology standards.

Ideal Profile

* Medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
* Additional fellowship training or strong experience in Uveitis or Ocular Immunology will be an advantage.
* Board certification or equivalent recognized qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Eligible for specialist or consultant licensure with the relevant UAE healthcare licensing authority.
* Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship clinical experience in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, or related ophthalmic subspecialty care.
* Strong experience managing pediatric cataracts, congenital glaucoma, strabismus, amblyopia, developmental eye disorders, and complex anterior segment conditions.
* Experience in ROP screening and treatment in collaboration with neonatal and pediatric teams.
* Proven ability to manage uveitis, ocular inflammatory disorders, and immunosuppression therapy in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Strong surgical judgment, careful clinical decision-making, and ability to manage complex pediatric cases with sensitivity.
* Excellent communication skills with a family-centered approach to counselling children, parents, and caregivers.
* Commitment to teaching, research, clinical audit, patient safety, and continuous professional development.
