Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Surgery will deliver specialized surgical care for pediatric patients across neonatal, infant, childhood, and adolescent age groups. The role includes diagnostic assessment, operative planning, therapeutic procedures, ward-based care, emergency response, and long-term follow-up for complex pediatric surgical conditions. The consultant will support safe clinical decision-making, multidisciplinary coordination, junior doctor supervision, and continuous service improvement within Dubai’s advanced pediatric healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver high-quality surgical care for pediatric patients, including neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with acute, congenital, traumatic, or acquired surgical conditions.
* Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within approved pediatric surgery privileges and hospital standards.
* Conduct daily ward rounds, review patient progress, and formulate individualized treatment plans in coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
* Assess pediatric surgical referrals, prioritize urgent cases, and guide appropriate investigation, operative planning, and follow-up care.
* Provide on-call coverage and respond to pediatric surgical emergencies according to departmental schedules and clinical urgency.
* Collaborate with neonatology, pediatrics, anesthesia, intensive care, radiology, emergency medicine, oncology, gastroenterology, nursing, and allied healthcare teams for complex case management.
* Supervise junior doctors, residents, fellows, and clinical team members through case discussion, operative guidance, bedside teaching, and performance feedback.
* Maintain accurate and timely medical records, including consultation notes, operative reports, consent forms, ward round plans, discharge summaries, and follow-up documentation.
* Participate in departmental meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.
* Uphold patient rights, confidentiality, infection control, safeguarding principles, and ethical care standards.
* Engage in research, publications, CME activities, clinical teaching, and professional development relevant to pediatric surgery.
* Support innovation in pediatric surgical care by contributing to protocol updates, service improvement, and evidence-based clinical practice.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Completion of accredited residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Surgery.
* Board certification in Pediatric Surgery, such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 7 years of post-specialization experience in pediatric surgery.
* At least 2 years of experience in a tertiary care center is preferred.
* Strong expertise in neonatal surgery, pediatric emergency surgery, congenital surgical conditions, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic pediatric surgical care.
* Proven ability to manage complex pediatric cases in collaboration with multidisciplinary hospital teams.
* Strong leadership, communication, clinical decision-making, mentoring, and documentation skills.
* Ability to supervise junior medical staff and contribute to their training, evaluation, and professional development.
* Commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, confidentiality, ethical practice, clinical governance, research, and continuous medical education.
