Role
The Consultant - Perinatal Psychiatry will provide expert psychiatric care for women and families during one of the most clinically sensitive stages of life. The position covers preconception mental health planning, pregnancy-related psychiatric assessment, postpartum mood and anxiety disorder treatment, psychotropic medication review, high-risk safety planning, inpatient and outpatient care, and close collaboration with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, midwifery, nursing, and allied health teams. The consultant will help strengthen perinatal mental health services in Dubai by promoting early detection, evidence-based treatment, safe prescribing, and compassionate support for mothers, babies, and families.
What You’ll Do
* Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment and management for women before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and throughout the postpartum period.
* Diagnose and treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, and related psychiatric conditions.
* Manage complex cases involving psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, balancing maternal stability, fetal safety, lactation considerations, and clinical risk.
* Conduct risk assessments, crisis intervention, safeguarding reviews, relapse prevention planning, and safety plans for high-risk mothers.
* Support patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions as they transition into pregnancy, delivery planning, postpartum recovery, and early parenting.
* Provide counselling on reproductive planning, medication adjustments, psychiatric risk reduction, mental health optimization, and family support needs.
* Collaborate closely with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, midwifery, nursing, social work, and emergency care teams.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, joint perinatal clinics, complex care reviews, and discharge planning discussions.
* Oversee inpatient and outpatient perinatal psychiatric services with clear treatment pathways and follow-up plans.
* Ensure clinical practice follows DHA standards, hospital protocols, perinatal mental health guidelines, medication safety requirements, and ethical care principles.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and service development projects.
* Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, medication decisions, safety plans, consent discussions, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
* Teach and supervise residents, psychologists, nurses, midwives, and allied health staff on perinatal psychiatry and early identification of psychiatric concerns.
* Lead training sessions that improve awareness of prenatal and postpartum mental health risks among clinical teams.
* Engage in research, publications, evidence-based practice, and continuous professional development in women’s mental health and perinatal psychiatry.
Required Skills and Experience
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completed residency training in Psychiatry.
* Subspecialty training or strong clinical experience in Perinatal Psychiatry, Prenatal Psychiatry, or Women’s Mental Health.
* Board certification such as American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for Consultant licensure with Dubai Health Authority.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-consultant experience is preferred.
* Strong expertise in psychopharmacology during pregnancy and lactation.
* Proven ability to manage perinatal depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, psychosis, and complex psychiatric risk.
* Experience in women’s mental health, tertiary care, high-risk obstetric settings, or integrated maternal health services will be an advantage.
* Excellent communication and counselling skills with the ability to support sensitive discussions around pregnancy, medication, risk, bonding, and family wellbeing.
* Strong multidisciplinary teamwork skills and the confidence to coordinate care across mental health, obstetric, neonatal, and community services.
