Role Context

The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for adults with acute, chronic, and complex psychiatric conditions. The role combines psychiatric evaluation, psychopharmacology, risk assessment, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and multidisciplinary case management. Fluency in Arabic and English will support stronger communication with patients and families, while collaboration with psychologists, social workers, nurses, primary care physicians, and other specialists will help improve continuity of care, treatment adherence, and long-term mental health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

* Assess and diagnose patients presenting with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral health conditions.
* Manage mood disorders including major depression and bipolar disorder using evidence-based treatment approaches.
* Diagnose and treat anxiety disorders, panic symptoms, trauma-related presentations, and related psychiatric conditions.
* Provide specialist management for psychosis, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and other severe mental illnesses.
* Assess and manage personality disorders and complex behavioral presentations.
* Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations covering mental state, medical history, psychosocial factors, risk, and functional impact.
* Perform structured risk assessments for self-harm, suicide, aggression, vulnerability, and clinical deterioration.
* Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, severity, patient preference, and multidisciplinary input.
* Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications safely, including assessment of treatment response, side effects, interactions, and adherence.
* Manage acute psychiatric presentations requiring urgent assessment, stabilization, or escalation of care.
* Provide inpatient psychiatric management for patients requiring close observation or intensive treatment.
* Conduct outpatient consultations and long-term follow-up for chronic psychiatric conditions.
* Deliver emergency psychiatric care and crisis intervention when clinically required.
* Provide psychotherapy, supportive counseling, or structured psychological interventions where appropriate and within scope of practice.
* Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and contribute to coordinated treatment planning.
* Communicate diagnoses, treatment options, medication risks, prognosis, and recovery goals clearly to patients and families.
* Provide culturally sensitive psychiatric care to Arabic-speaking and multicultural patient populations.
* Maintain accurate psychiatric assessments, risk documentation, medication records, treatment plans, and follow-up notes.
* Ensure clinical practice complies with ethical, legal, confidentiality, and patient safety standards.
* Participate in clinical governance, audits, morbidity reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Supervise and train junior doctors, residents, and mental health professionals.
* Support mental health education and awareness initiatives for patients, families, and clinical teams.
* Maintain professional competence through continuing medical education, research, and review of advances in psychiatric treatment.

Ideal Profile

* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Psychiatry is mandatory.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in Psychiatry.
* UK CCT, MRCPsych, or equivalent Western training is strongly preferred.
* Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care.
* Proven ability to manage acute psychiatric emergencies and complex high-risk cases.
* Strong expertise in mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, personality disorders, and long-term mental health management.
* Advanced knowledge of psychotropic medication use, monitoring, and treatment optimization.
* Experience providing psychotherapy or supportive counseling is advantageous.
* Strong clinical judgment and ability to make timely decisions in challenging psychiatric situations.
* Excellent leadership and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Fluency in Arabic and English is highly desirable for effective patient and family communication.
* Strong awareness of cultural factors influencing psychiatric assessment, treatment engagement, and recovery.
* Commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, patient-centered care, and evidence-based psychiatry.
